I am in need of setting up an RPC for my Hardinge.
The lathe name tag shows 4.4amp 1hp.
Also has a 1/6hp coolant pump motor

I am looking at a 5hp American Rotare phase converter.
I have a Doerr Electirc 5hp motor that should serve as the idler.
It is Delta wound (9 wires) so I should be good to go ???

As I already own the Doerr, it can't hardly get much cheaper.
We'll find out how loud it is once the control panel arrives.
I'll put it outside in its own enclosure if it is too loud...

Try it under power first before you get into that motor, it may work just fine. Belt it to a pony motor so you can spin it up before energizing.

The RPC has a motor starter....should I still spin it up? Does it matter which direction it is rotated?

Not if you spin it up yourself. If the box has a few capacitors inside then some of them might be start capacitors.
The black plastic ones are going to eventually fail. The aluminum metal can one last forever. But they take up more space per mfd unit.
