I personally got just an on-sale gaming laptop, ryzen7, 16g, 1tb ssd, dedicad graphics, cost me 1200 2 years ago, does just fine in fusion, SW(while trial lasted), as well as automation software like TIA portal. Unless you are very very corporate I doubt you need workstation laptop, get good CPU/GPU and upgradable ram/storage and you are good to go. Having it 16-17" also helps in cad. not squinting as much as on 13-14-15

If you want to answer a question and participate in a thread, then you need to make sure that you read it well enough to get a good understanding about what's being asked. As a grown man, if I ever found myself in a position where I needed or wanted to spend 3k at the drop of a hat and I had to worry about someone carrying that debt over me, then yeah, I'd consider myself broke. If you can't buy it twice you can't afford it. The vehicles I have don't matter. The equity in the house doesn't matter. The 401k balance doesn't matter. It's not readily available capital.

You're actually talking some real shit here and not just BS'ing. Financing something for $3K is kind of dumb. That is one way people stay in debt, with little money saved and worrying about their next paycheck going into their check on Thursday night instead of Friday night so they can pay a bill or something. I do not like financing something of this nature, but it just isn't important enough for me to want to drop $3K out of my checking for a computer that's way more capable than anything I need it for and that won't get used but maybe 2-3 times a week, if that. That was an impulse buy that I generally would not make, but customizing a computer and having it built for you with all these modern, high-end GPU's and CPU's, large SSD's and a bunch or RAM sounds cool, and it is, but it's just not something I need so I decided to cancel that order and buy a less expensive refurbished computer.

If I took all the money I have in everything from my checking, savings, investments, 401K, etc I could buy 55+ computers costing $3K, but then I would be broke. Some people I work with claim to struggle to keep more than $3K in their checking, whentheyI make probably at least as much as me? You need to make an effort to save money, and build up enough funds to live comfortably/securely. My credit score checked at 821 when I was approved with Dells financing. That's because I always pay my bills on time and don't get over my head on things I buy. Living check to check is for the birds. When I make large purchases they are intentional and planned out in most cases. I waited 1.5 years to buy my tractor new in 2018 to get what I wanted for a price that I thought was fair. I shopped for about 4.5-5 months for my new truck to get what I wanted for a good price in todays market. This refurbished computer I bought it pretty nice. I have decent graphics, 64 GB RAM, a half a terabyte of harddrive. (Even though I was told it was a whole terabyte) This thing runs way smoother than the old computers we ran Mastercam on at my last job. This thing is responsive, and programs like Fusion3D seem to be no problem for it. I need no more computer than this. This isn't the fastest computer out there, but it certainly isn't slow by the standards I'm used to. Also props to the people I bought it from. While I was disappointed that it didn't have that 1TB SSD they claimed, I am happy with the condition of this computer. Either this was a very lightly used unit that was taken care of, or they did a great job refurbishing it, as it looks and feels pretty much like a new computer.

I've never owned a Linux, but the main reason I require a PC is HPTuners only supports Windows. They now have Apple, and Andriod apps that you can tune with if you have a newer RTD+ programmer, but I haven't been able to get it to link up reliably using the app on my phone, so I just stick with connecting it to a laptop with Windows.

BTW, I'll just mention that if I didn't need the mobility of a laptop to tune a datalog with then I would likely go with a desktop.

Ok, I was just curious since Linux is android based . You can download a bare bones OS free and then add what you need to operate, unlike windows which comes loaded with a lot of memory gobbling systems that you may not need . If you have an old laptop running slow with windows 7 you can download linux OS free and give it a run . https://ubuntu.com/download. You can either partition your hard drive and run duel systems or dump windows completely .You don't have to use command line much any more so it's a lot easier for most people to use linux now.
