Advice on buying safe steel D1-8 Faceplate/Driver

That's a result then Cannonmn :) and just because its a chuck, doesn't mean you can't drill and tap holes in it as well if needed (well it's never stopped me :D)

Izzat what the "beloved" French call "the English disease?"

Chronically drilling each other's ass for the injection of brains at "Public School". in the "proper pecking order" by CLASS? Who makes the toast, who "takes wine" with whom, so as to pre-set "Old Boy" bizness network stratification into stone for the rest of their allegedly-posh bored silly lives?

Self-inflicted habitual handicap of too-long practice, that.

:(

Not MY lot. DEDICATED "pussy hounds", we. Tastes better. remains so longer. DAMHIKT!

Only the second generation after they wuz so rude as to hang G'Dad^nth Francis. and we had got the f**k outta Dodge -- or Hampton Court.. and off to the New World.

My namesake already 40 yrs of age, been turned DOWN as a candidate for the "New World" on account of age and empty pockets?

Clever bugger found a way they couldn't easily interfere with.

Framed hisself for a hangin' crime. BIGTIME. No half-measures in our DNA!

"Stole" such an OUTRAGEOUS count of poultry in one go, arranged to be caught, same night, nary a single feather damaged, they had no other option but to hang him or ship him off to Virginia. With a solid 7 years "guaranteed employment"! Too tough and wiry, even age 40, to waste a hanging, and those cost the crown more money to set-up and hire done than they earned anyway.

Dumb like a Fox.

Free travel. Work is what we doo's, regardless, and.... We wuz back in the farming, injun-war fighting, Magistrating, Sheriffing, book-writing, and Lawster/Judge bizness, same generation and thereafter!

"Special Relationship" Cousins..

.because if Blighty had not had Virginia and Australia to ship its orneriest, rudest, and most energetic-clever go-getter citizens off to?

You wudda had to be invading France twice a year... just to burn-up the energy fast enough to keep us from tearing-up the furniture in every dam' Public House in the whole bored-spitless Kingdom twice a WEEK!

"Dynamic" Mother England. Full fifteen THOUSAND years a slow-borning.

Same half, different day... and "now I'll have the other half, if you please!"

:D

So the 4J chuck is a good solution...but would be safe guess that it doesn't cure your original request....that of being steel....Likely a 4J chuck that size even from a quality maker will be Iron, maybe Ductil iron.(which would likely be OK)
Still faced with the training issue of getting your operators to understand the gear shifting setup on that lathe and when not to use top gear....
Cheers Ross

Well.
Buying a high quality chuck. - does anyone know if it actually will fail when doing overspeed?

I have several chucks myself, which have a certain rpm written on it. But many of them don't..
But some of my lathes actually have a plate on it, saying the max rpm of a 4jaw, - with the maximum swing size.

Beacuse allot of chuck don't have it written, I just go from the lathes specs. And normally when doing 4jaw work, my speeds are rather low..

But again. Anyone seen a chuck fail when overspeed? If, what rpm did it happen?
Beacuse, maybe a 1500rpm chuck can easily handle 2000. But not 2500?

I know you shouldn't experience. And I wouldn't go beyond the recommendation.. It's just a thought..

Not responsibile for your low-energy levels NOR your lack of common sense at to "connecting the g-damned dots".

Get your head out.

As the IC engine CI flywheel should have twigged y'all to, it isn't ABOUT the chuck body itself becoming shrapnel.

As has BEEN mentioned . not just "in thread" recently.. by the nature of the beasts a 3-J scroll operated chuck has about HALF the grip and reserve grip of a screw-jack operated 4-J?

So....

It is ABOUT the forces building up IN the form of kinetic energy of an unpredictably balanced or NOT .. or IF balanced, pushed OUT of balance WORKPIECE...

To be balanced with the forces acting in a rapidly increasing manner on the HEAVY Jaws vs their retention system and adjuster/positioner system.

That reaches the point.. wherein the chuck NO lONGER HAS... a safe reservoir of GRIP!

Whether overspeed actually BREAKS any part of the chuck or NOT....out cometh the potentially DEADLY destructive force stored in a chunk of metal wanting to "be elsewhere" ...and neither slowly, nor GENTLY!

"just a thought"...

For "extra credit" go ye, one and all, over to the bragging brochures of folk such as Schunk and the other handful of really good, and really COSTLY .. power-operated chucks built for high-RPM balls-to-the-walls CNC spindles that must shit parts FAST . or go hungry.

There research ye chucks as use NEITHER scroll nor screws, as ARE specifically built to not only endure higher RPM, but with mechanisms to TIGHTEN the grip as RPM goes up!

IOW.. humankind JF DEALS WITH the high-RPM challenge. It's only MONEY, after all.

Capeche?

Hate to seem to make fun of fellow Virginian, but the quote above is actually another chapter in his Manifesto. History of Mankind according to Him. There are a lot of good thoughts camouflaged within each soliloquy, but extracting them can be quite a challenge.

It is a precious DELIGHT anyone is able to "make fun of" me.

Life would be dreadfully dull and dreary without at least an attempt ever' now and then!

And it is MEANT to be a challenge, Pilgrim.

Any damned FOOL can buy drugs, booze, an iPad, Game-Boy, XBox, or one or more subscriptions to sports or porn channels and rot brain to MUSH, pickled or preservative-free, but useless for its OEM as-built purpose!

Those folk don't work out all that well at feeding their own futures nor family, nor are reliable at keeping the FICA transfer payments (there IS NO genuine "trust fund" by this late date..) going INTO the system that backs-up MY Social Security retirement check!

So, yes, I am a greedy, self-centered BASTARD.

Even if it isn't "all there is", I DID pay more than the top 30 years of my total coverage at "maximum" into the thing while it was MY turn in that barrel.

Just an abrasive bastard that recognizes that if mankind in general, and the USA in particular, continues to degrade itself by its own indifferent sloth, "mailbox money" won't buy me a lick of immunity from the shared disaster that follows such declines. "More than just the one time."

Tales from a very early in life Mentor, Herr Pelz, of life under the Weimar Reich, family sharing of the agonies of the "Great Depression". Knowing firsthand all too damned much about barefoot, hungry, ass-deep in debt, sniped. machine-gunned etc. by folk who actually had a fair level of SKILL at it, BTW..

. and thankfully?

Not all at the same time on the same day!

:D

So... as a pragmatist, not altruist, I really DO wish "all hands" the ability and reality of doing as well for themselves and family as they possibly can do.

And then some!

Just not .. as some form of "entitlement" to "Other People's Money" they DID NOT pay the least damned penny in to fund,.. nor perhaps ever WILL.. nor most asssirdly NOT for "free everything", or "free ANYTHING" ..regardless of how allegedly funded.. because "free" is the most damning of the countless lies ever invented by man!

TANSTAAFL!

SOMEBODY ALWAYS PAYS!

BTW.. "History according to..."? Well . if you want to invent your OWN? First thing yah need is a "stealth" backline that stayed TF out of trouble and recorded mention as to what they had gotten up to!

Xin Loy!

Too late for me by just over 600 years, already. There are Church records, Court records, English County publications, Virginia County publications, Military records, names on maps, published books, mention in OTHER folk's published works, even roadside signage the State places along its highway and such!
Small clan. Longer lives than usual. Fewer generations involved than average to span longer years. Far fewer mysteries than is typical.

I'm sure I write English better than you do Danish [emoji6]

I do know I have mis-spellings, incorrect use of word and/or where to place them.
But I recall write several times, - sorry for my bad English.

Never the less. I don't try to invent my own words and similar.

And yes, only 101 posts. [emoji849]
Not 3x.xxx like other. - I have other things to do than spent my life on a forum. [emoji6][emoji16]

Colchester - The world turns on Colchester lathes.

I've made two 12" faceplates, one for our 15 x 50 Clausing/Colchester manual and one for our Haas TL1. The Clausing uses a D1-6 mount. I made the cam lock pins and cut the spindle nose taper right into the backplate. The Haas uses an A2-6(I think) mount, I made an adapter plate to fit to the spindle nose and then fitted the faceplate to the adapter.

I started with some A36 burnouts about 12-1/2" diameter and 1-1/2" thick. I welded a short piece of 4" pipe to one side and chucked that up in the four jaw to cut the back side features. Kept the RPMs down, took my time, not a place to get in a hurry. I cut the tack welds off, mounted the faceplate on the proper machine, and cut the face and OD true.

I drilled and tapped a bunch of 1/2-13 holes in the face, one set is a four hole BC, the other is a six hole BC that uses some of the holes of the four hole BC. Also made some threaded studs with 1/4-20 holes drilled thru them at right angles so I can use them to slide something into place around on the face and then keep it from moving. Makes it easy to indicate in a fixture, beats hitting it with a hammer.

Since both lathes will handle about the same size work, by having identical faceplate geometry I can move some jobs to the manual lathe if necessary, and if the CNC lathe is free I can run some manual type work on it.

Don't recall the cost for the burnouts but if my labor isn't counted I know I got away cheaper than buying commercial ones. And they are made from known material.

Why not simply use the (S)crap material/leftover parts you buy from HGR ?

Zakly what the orange-painted steel plates are, a pallet from HGR. Like I said I’ll check hardness then cut a circle (15”?) on the 36” vertical Do All bandsaw. Then mount it on a to-be-bought D1-8 backplate, then turn OD smooth and bore Center hole.

Lighten-up, guys. It's all trivial to the point of silly in the grand scheme of actual life, not "internet life" anyway.

Trivia, not that it matters, English is just bad Danish. Danish is just bad English. Been that way for one HELLUVA long time, already.

Just say "Good morning" to each other in a relaxed. casual, and ordinary manner. Don't "over think it". Just do as you do.

See if EITHER of yah even spot the subtle difference!

:D

Oh.. and SOMEBODY has to keep re-inventing the language(s) lest the USERS OF THEM stagnate.

Egghead PhD's as said I'm supposed to be one of those who JF does that. Test-score thing. And then special courses. Long time ago, already. Seems to work OK. Besides.. it's a bit of FUN!

JFDWT. Or do not. They never SAID I had to actually give a damn.

Ok finally had time to look at some of that stuff and found a shiny 10-inch disc that looks like it might have been used in a CNC contraption. It has T-slot-like cavities but I don’t have a clue where I’d look for Tee-nuts to fit. The slot width is 1 in., flange width 1.125 in., flange height 0.188 in. Lacking tee nuts to fit, I’d be happy Mounting it and drilling holes in it as needed.

There’s a 14 inch cast iron plate with 4 tee-slots, just need to mount it on a suitable backplate. It came mounted on an NMTB 40 arbor which arranged with four bolts.
