i know this is the monarch site, but do not know where else to post this question. i have found a american lathe for sale near me. it's app 17 or 18 inch swing, built like a monarch. has finger plungers on the carraige ,to oil the carraige and cross feed ways. 675 highest rpm. it has a threaded nose on the spindle for the chuck mount, number 5 morris taper in the tailstock. this is a gear driven lathe. only number i can find for a model number is clx6922c. tag says american lathe blackman and nuetzel machinery company saint louis. the spindle speed chart has american tool works company stamped on the tag. is this an american pacemaker or just an american like stamped on the tag. can not find any information on the internet. thanks for any help.

Sounds like a High Duty, the design predecessor to Pacemakers- some gearheads, some flat belt drive. They generally used threaded spindles, made from circa 1912 up to the early 40's. A few Pacemaker design features did make it to them. If it has pushbutton oilers, and levers for the carriage and cross feeds then its probably mid 1930's or later.

If on a PC, look for the little landscape icon, just to the left of the smiley face- click it, you can drag and drop pics. Heaven knows how to do it on a phone... I don't interact with PM much using my phone, its too clumsy.

I'd be happy to post pics for you in the antique machinery forum if you'd like- can take them by email etc.

I was told many years ago that American lathes and American Pacemaker lathes were different companies. I can't offer any proof either way.

After American Tool went out of business, someone else came along and tried to use their name. I don't know if that's what you refer to ?

Also, towards the end of the company, ATI imported some lathes from ... India ? ... and sold them as American Tool lathes. Not Pacemakers, I think "Pacesetter" ? That did not work out so well.

But it's easy to identify either case, as Pacemakers look very distinctive and yes, the Pacemaker was a product of American Tool Works, or ATI in a later incarnation. Your informer was mistaken.
