And yes EG, health care costs in the US are beyond the pale. But, who are we to tell doctors and nurses how much their jobs are worth? Health care on the surface may be considered a "human right", but it's still something that must be paid for.
...
Being British I don't have a dog in this particular fight, but it would be interesting to learn how much of the money raised by the healthcare companies actually goes to the doctors, nurses and others actually delivering the healthcare, and how much goes to the 'suits', investors, offshore trusts and so on.

All of our retirements are tied into the great pyramid of insurance and other big fish. If we are going to call them pigs we must first look in the mirror at our 401ks and pensions. Its a viscous cycle. Just like the US G8vernment loaning from social security. It should be against the law

"Speedie said:
I always thought it was interesting the government let so many huge business assets go overseas from auctions. So many big shops have been liquidated since 2006"

No doubt the export/sale/auction of technology goes back one way or another a couple of hundred years.
One of the more recent, if 30 years is considered, recent is/was the sale, dismantling, and re-assembly of the former Kaiser steel mill in Fontana, California. Ultimately one report says 14 different facilities were moved.
Had to be a really expensive process but most probably invaluable in jump starting China's steel industry. During that period:...."To buy, dismantle and ship them to China is far cheaper and quicker for that nation than to design and build ones with their own resources."

The article (link below) is interesting to read and maybe compare to where we, the U.S. and China, are at 30 years later.

So I submit parting out the steel industry as a really colossal example of a loss of expertise and institutional knowledge

"We have 330 million people in this country, yet only about 165 million work. HALF. So for every American who is working, they are not only providing for themselves, but an entire other person! It's bullshit."

Good point. Let's kill those that don't work - by denying heathcare or food or housing.

Start with kids under 18, they're mostly not working.
Then go on to elderly people who are retired. Not working
Then get to the disabled. Most of them are not working either.
Pregnant ladies who don't work? They're next.
Vets who are collecting VA benefits and not working? Them too, kill em'.
Anyone working for cash only? They're gone too.

What is wrong with you.

More liberal horseshit.

The labor participation rate (of eligible-aged workers) is currently about 65%.

What's wrong with 100% participation of those able to work?

I've worked hard for my money, sacrificed my entire life really in pursuit of a career. I don't give a shit if some deadbeat who had the same opportunities but chose not to pursue them, doesn't have health insurance or goes hungry.

We need more hunger in this country for the deadbeats. Nothing motivates a man like a growling belly...

I have a feeling that many of the ones that used to work, that now are not, likely are the lesser valued [fiscally] parent, who is now staying home to raise their own kids, rather than taking to a babysitter. IDK what happened to child care, but the rate has apparently skyrocketed.

My DIL stays home now with one kid, as they figgered that it would make a $300 difference in take-home at the end of the MONTH!

My daughter takes 3 kids to a commercial daycare 3 (?) days a week, and that is $1800/month I believe?
Whether they go or not, it is a reserved spot for them.

So you gotta make pretty good $ to make day care pencile out these days it seems.

Why are differing opinions being deleted? That’s a pretty low point for this forum given some of the folks who are allowed to continue posting, and who take every attempt to push their narrative, while contributing little to nothing about metal working.

Controlling the narrative and deleting offending opinions is right up Gentile’s alley. Jim Rozen posts like a deranged psychopath, and will likely stroke out based on his vile hatred, but that’s his opinion. Adds a little spiciness. And while I am confident Rozen is a stout disciple of Gentile, as he clearly worships the state, I’m a little surprised that this board has gotten to the point that one set of opinions are deleted and another are allowed.

You might have a small point there, were it not for the fact that health care is a protected cartel and the medical profession is a self-regulating system designed to keep others out.

And then there's the 'insurance' companies sitting in the middle siphoning off a shit-ton of money in return for slowing down and obstructing actual care. Because paying out reduces their profitability.

I know it's pointless saying it but really your entire system sucks. It's grossly inefficient and delivers shitty outcomes. Your world ranking shows this. But it's your chosen system so suck it up.

What?

You apparently read what he posted.
And you think he got axed b/c of his view point?

I don't even know what his view point was.
I didn't read that far, and I don't even remember which side of the isle he appeared to be on.
It didn't matter.

I can go back and read it all if somehow it matters?

I am cornfused tho, from your post above, which "side" doo you think is getting squorshed?

.. and who is Gentile in this case?
I'm a Kraut, so, no, I'm not a Jew.
What does that have to doo with the number of chipmunks that died in California mudslides in 1937?

Wait, is this the thread where somebody who was off his meds made a fresh account and started ranting and replying to himself? If Jim responded to anything he said, I'm kinda glad it's all just gone.

Well, there were some ... lots fewer now I guess, but might still be a few ?

toolcat, look into who sets the prices for health care. It's not doctors and nurses.

On a semi-related note, was looking up something about inconel. Company that developed it got sold and sold again and sold again until now it's owned by Berkshire-Hathaway. Umm, why ? Does being owned by a banker make you more interested in your field, more likely to come out with newer better stuff ? Or more likely to just bleed what the people did before they were owned by a bank for every single drop of cash possible, then throw the company away like a dishrag you just cleaned the toilet with ? How much does a finance guy care about hi-temp alloys ? Except what he can get for the trademark, I mean ? How much "institutional knowledge" do you have when the prime goal of a company is to suck out every drop of blood it has, "cut the fat, this project won't earn anything for five years, ditch it, we don't need old Ed, we can get a kid for 1/3 what he costs" ... you know the routine. Replace all the people with knowledge with ChatGPT, stock goes up sixty million, yippee, someone made out good.

How much of the US "gdp" is based on this crap ? Just wondering ...

Sure, companies need to make money. But when that is the only goal, then you've just lost the plot and that's a first step to losing everything you've got -- except for the five guys who now own everything in the country. Super.

All that's left to do then is blame cheap chinese labor ... US has been on a downwards slope since the mid-seventies when all this shit started but you still can't figure it out :(

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black, lack of doctors and nurses is a daily topic in the news in Australia.

Foreign doctors are under qualified so you send them to the bush where they need to work for a few years. Last time I checked all of the human species had their organs and limbs in the same position, this is despite that fact that some seem to have their heads jammed firmly up their backside.

On a side note I fell ill in Shanghai on a business trip in 2017, the only thing that saved my life were the Chinese doctors and nurses with their sub standard training. And no I was not treated by some special foreigner specific doctor. The hospital was cleaner and more well organised than the private hospital back in Australia. And the nurses were a damn sight more attentive and attractive.
