I picked up a rusty Atlas 3A1 5ton arbor press.
Looks like somebody cut the ram, handwheel and lever off with a cutting torch (disgruntled employee?).
Other than the rust the frame looks mint.
I've been able to get the spindle out and have enough of the ram that I can fab the ram.
I've removed enough rust off to warrant new paint.
I can guess at the handwheel and the handle.

Does anyone have a Dake or Atlas 3A that they would be willing to take a pic of the pawl?
If you were able to include a pic of a rule, that would help with scale.
Thanks to a previous PM post for a 1 1/2 Dake press by Lew Hartswick I've got the general configuration.

I've called Dake.
Very friendly, helpful people. I am unable/unwilling to pay the price of new OEM.
Especially when I can fab it.

Any/all assist is appreciated!

Thank you!!

I have an Atlas No. 3, compound leverage, but am not sure if the pawls are the same. How wide are the teeth on your ratchet wheel, and what diameter is the shaft your pawl rides on?

I believe they use a stub tooth gear form to build up strength on the pinion. However the ram being straight-sided would be the easier of the two to make!

The pawl is (without a picture) a sort of teardrop profile, hammered flat, with the big end on the pivot post. There is a small lever arm going down at more or less right angles to the teardrop axis, this is designed to lift the ratchet tooth up when the lever-arm is full back. The lifting action is done by another pin emanating from a bore on the press frame.

If we can avoid various chuckles about my setup and choice of machine ;) here it is out of the ancient archives. I did get the job done without hurting myself or the part.

Thank you JW and Matt.
The Atlas 3A1 is a Dake 3A. 5Ton ratcheting, without a compound.

Here is the PM link to a Dake 1 1/2 pawl pic & drawing.

Do the 3A Pawls look similar?

My intent for the ram is to copy the tooth pattern off of the remaining 10inches of ram.
It's in great shape! Just significantly short.

The pawl ratchet gear is 1.250 wide.
And the diameter of the pawl shaft is 1.180.

Thank you,
Daryl

The gear on mine is 1.5" wide, but the shaft is 1.188. Here's a photo, just for the sake of it:

Just out of curiosity, how much does Dake want for a new pawl?
