Recently got this and found it's older than I thought and thus harder to find parts. So I am going to post it here if someone is looking for what I have to make their lathe project complete or if you want to buy the one I have ($1000 plus shipping? I will strap to a little pallet for shipping).

So I got this to tinker in my garage and it's missing a couple of parts. Turns out it's really hard to find the parts and even if you do they are spendy. I am looking for a lathe to learn on and make stuff so this might be... better left to someone that can appreciate it.

I am missing the part that holds the gears for chaning and the forward and reverse direction parts for the slide. Otherwise it's pretty compleate. No rust and covered with a couple layers of paint. I can get more info if you like.

I also have an attachment to do milling? and all the speed/feed gears? Located 15 min south of Canadian borader in Bellingham, Wa. Thanks
In general, a functional "plug & play" Barnes lathe converted to electric motor drive (however this may be done) runs around $400. This is what just about ANY reasonably functional lathe sells for - that if it's served with a fairly complete set of tooling to use on the lathe.

If you have the fairly complete tooling, this might be considered your "start point." I see you have the flywheel, which might be a desirable addition to those who want to "bring this one back" to velocipede.

Naked flywheels have sold reproduced in the $275 range a few years back - this might be an "add-on" for this lathe bringing a total to perhaps $675 EXCEPT that a barnes flywheel of identified application was recently seen selling on Ebay for less than $100. So perhaps split the price difference and call this lathe with flywheel $550?

Of course your buyer will be wanting to "go the distance" to make this a complete velocipede lathe - there ARE some parts being reproduced, but one has to have the money, be patient and possibly ingenious and certainly lucky to bring it the whole distance.

Ebay entries notwithstanding, a complete Velocipede Barnes typically runs in the $800 to $1000 range, again depending on completeness of tooling. Original boxes (three) might bring it to $1200.

IN GENERAL, by the time you ask $550 for this and confront the uncertainty of a buyer being able or willing to "go the distance" (one is almost better off to buy a complete lathe in the $800 range. That is, be in no rush, advertise your interest, be willing to accept help, and stay away from Ebay.) You'll be lucky. So, in a way, this kind of "ask" is challenged in its creation.

In general, it is a financial bad move to try to "complete" an incomplete Barnes lathe. One is better off to buy complete.

But - it is not always about the money. Some, including me, have "completed" a Barnes lathe. (Now 2 actually) I was fortunate for both to find a "starter" lathe that was a good buy and I'm reasonably sure now 10 years later to be able to get my money out of it. But the money/profit was NOT reason for my purchase, or my limitation.

Perhaps you will find this kind of buyer? Or maybe temper your ask to attract this sort of buyer. Or possibly ask what you paid and consider favorably your service to mechanicial preservation to bring this to someone of interest?

Again - it's not always about the money.

However you decide - good luck!

Hi, Big Tree House, are you still holding this? I have a 4 1/2 that I'm almost finished restoring to velocipede status. Anyone else with parts or needs, please post. They are making the change gears from hard plastic now.
