I don't have a Bridgrport #1 boring head but looking at pictures it appears to be very simple. Does anyone have disassembled photos or drawings of the parts. From what I can see it just has 4 main parts the arbor, main body, boring bar holder and a screw. Must be a very good fit for the dove tail, does it just use a set screw to hold adjustment? Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Not sure why you wouldn’t just buy a boring head.
but yes set screws hold it once you have it adjusted.
never build what you can buy at a reasonable price any you can get a
import knock off fairly cheap

I have several knockoff boring heads and they are crappy. Terrible screws and just bad parts overall. I make all kinds of things I can buy that's why I have machinery. This won't even be a boring head but the adjustment head for a over the top ball turner. I made one with a 2" boring head already but I want to build a much shorter one that fits my lathe better. I have to crank out the compound and cross slide to almost max to make it work. I will devise a shorter AXA holder for it also, the boring bar holder it just to long.

one thing I like about the bridgeport boring head over a criterion, is the dial doesn't travel with the tool, so the index line is on top and easy to see. Most others have the index mark on the bottom side of the slide
The only one I like better is my chandler facing head. Which uses a graduated ring on top and reads .0002 and has .01 per rev.

If your wanting an over the top type ball turning attachment then first there's a proper kit to build one, https://www.hemingwaykits.com/HK1160 Added to that would be the build instructions in this book https://www.teepublishing.co.uk/boo...them/improvements-accessories-for-your-lathe/ But G.H. Thomas made some improvements above what Radford designed. Imo well worth buying both for the additional ball turning attachment tool sharpening and his added gib strip that wasn't in the original Radford design as well as a huge amount of additional information would be this book. https://www.teepublishing.co.uk/books/in-your-workshop/model-engineers-workshop-manual/ If you build a lot of machine tool accessories I can't recommend both the Radford and G.H. Thomas books highly enough.

That is a nice ball turner. I have purchased Hemingway plans for many items. I can get the materials much cheaper here in the states rather than having all that steel shipped across the pond. I will look into the head of this one.
72bwhite The reason I didn't ask about a ball turner is I wanted a good idea on how the Bridgeport boring head operated. It appeared that the screw stays with the body and only the tool attachment slide moves which I think is better. I think that question was answered by winger. Sorry I didn't ask the question that you seem to think I should have asked.
