I don't know how much these cost new, but I don't believe they are super cheap.

nope , not super cheap.............but when compared to a servo driven 4th between $20-30 k , plus install, they become quite more affordable.
Plus there is almost zero cost to maintain it, fits any machine and you never have to worry about electronics failing.
