Well hell I didn't even know you could buy a side lock holder in 1/8". I agree they are stupid simple and I love them for roughing operations but I feel like grinding the flat on these small 1/8 shanks will be a pain. We are trying to hold our tool length out within .030.

What kind of run out can I expect say 1" out and 1.5" out of holder?

I think you would be shocked how true Farnks side locks run. They will be less then what your getting now. Heck I would not even grind the flat for that size. many guys on here dont either. Just crank that set screw down it wont budge.

As mentioned by B-Matthews above, just crank that side screw onto the round shank ( assuming you're using carbide endmills). I doubt very much you're putting a lot of machining pressure on a 1/8 endmill, so that set screw should hold it just fine with no flat. Heck, I'm doing the same with 1/2 hog mills. Still haven't pulled one out yet.

My company makes super accurate extension holders called Accu-holds. Our most popular size is 1/8". The standard OD for these is 3/8" but we make many variations. Check them out at Accu-Holds . Even in an end mill holder we get less than .0003" run out.

I'll also second the Pioneer MX pull type holders. I bought 3 (MX06) of them for a job, and was very impressed. All of them had around .0001" of run-out.

Mari Tool makes some really nice stuff too, I haven't tried out their collet holders tho.

We been using the the Parlec EROS collet chucks and have loved them.

They look like a hybrid between the traditional ER and SK. How is the holding power compared to SK?

For evaluation, I recently replaced a tool holder HPI ER32 with Lyndex SK16. The end mill is a 1/2" reduced shank, sticking out about 4xD. Less vibration and better finish.

I wonder now about the ERos system versus SK. Interesting...

Techniks slim fit collets are good, and you can get them in several different gage lengths. The collets are shallow however, so keep that in mind. A quick caliper check shows about 7/8" depth in a 1/4" collet.

Get SX or SK collets and toolholders if you concerned about runout. Way better than ER and superior holding power. They cost more, but so do the issues you are dealing with from your ER collets.

SK6 would be the perfect size for 1/8 shank tooling. Currently we offer Sk10 and SK16, in the near future we are expanding our lineup to include Sk6 and Sk25.

I have some of those and hate the damn things. Collets get stuck and they have a very small depth for the tool to be set to.
