One way to get even heat transfer with out playing open flame from spot to spot is to pre heat another piece (scrap if available) then lay / press it against the part to be heated . Freezing as mentioned or using a co2 fire extinguisher or dry ice on the assy and using the preheated transfer piece will give uniform transfer . Use a heat gun to reach what ever temp you safely need and wedges to assist. Maybe two pieces of flat stock with a spacer tacked together, u shaped as wide as needed would give uniform quick heat transfer.
