Firing an employee because a better option came along

I will again caution the op that a guy who is the type who runs for public office may not be the guy who wants to run a dirty, boring job that makes him go home smelling like coolant...and that being there every scheduled day/hour is more important than his social life.

The OP should be darn sure that this new guy understands his place if it is to sit or stand at a machine and change parts for a few hours straight and take breaks to go to the bathroom, not go to the office to chat.

Likely the Op should keep both workers for two months to see if the new guy will stay or walk.

I am thinking many of us have to high of expectations of todays employees, based on our experiences from years ago. I and several who were learning the trade years ago had it in our minds that if we got real good at as many "shop related" tasks that we would likely make more money and be less likely to be laid off for whatever reason. Many of us had chores we were expected to do around the house long before we ever had a job, we were actually expected to remember and do them along with our homework. It is much easier to give kids a cell phone, video game or even Ritalin than it is to parent. Friday the UPS man brought me a package, I looked at it, I thought about it, I got a little pissed off and set it back down on the bench and left. I ignored it yesterday and today I decided that it is simply how things are today, employers have to step up and do more to insure the quality of the products they send out, we cannot expect the employees to remember anything, we have to make things so simple most anyone can do it without any training as the training you do before lunch is erased by lunch and you have to train again after lunch or do things like this:

I notice the instructions are only in English. MAyby French and Spanish readers do not need these detailed instruction to tape up a box. Or is to tape down?
I had no idea that you could not be color blind to be able to tape up a box. At least the instructions are not in Braille, are they?

No, just red print, though not too far from you is "Calaveras Big Trees" state park. They went through and fenced off everything so you can't get to the trees and carve on them or whatever, when they did this they made all the signs in Braille and knee high.

Interesting to me is all those tv commercials about join the army/navy/airforce/marines, coast guard must be close captioned for deaf recruits. I checked they do not accept deaf enlistees. But aL LFEDRAl paid ads must be close captioned. I wonder if the recruiting brochures are in Braile?

Say you've got an employee that shows up on time, does exactly what he's told and no more. He's entirely forgettable aside from the stupid things he always forgets to do, like check coolant level after lunch even though he's been told numerous times to do so. He has absolutely zero desire to learn anything, just wants his check and to go home. Which is fine; He's making good parts.

Now say you've got a chance to hire a guy who is a known entity, is smart, is willing to start at the bottom and learn the trade, and is hungry. He is much more personable than the other guy, and stands a good chance to be a star employee.

You don't have enough work for both of them.

Do you fire somebody that hasn't done anything wrong, to hire a better option?

With gaining over 100 replies the Op owes these guys the results of his decision. What he did, and how did it turn out for better or worse.

Sometimes the lower overhead of blanket rules wins over lots of extra space on the law books.
I’d make a case for common sense, but the courts have made it clear that common sense is unenforceable and the population has made it clear that someone will take advantage of any loophole.

The weirdest place for braille I saw was on a drive up ATM.

I got rejected from the military for having one eye that does not have tunnel vision. I have something like 20/400in my left eye.

I qualified for aircraft mechanic in the testing..I know that does not mean you get that job.
I had two uncles who were that... and then they worked at Lockheed one as a millwright and the as a mechanic.
