I tried Googling this but didn't really find an answer.

What should the width of the flat belt be vs the width of the pulley.

Said another way, if the width of my cone pulley is 1.25" on each step, what should the width of the flat belt be?

Thanks!

I would go with an 1 1/4" belt as long as the width of the smallest step on the cone is a little wider. If it is exactly 1 1/4, then go with a 1 to 1 1/8" wide belt.

Belt should be some smaller than length of cone step for the belt.

Looked in Halsey's Handbook dated 1913 - but nothing black and white found yet

If you went with the 1.25" width the belt would be trimmed down by the rotation of the cone. Would not advise this but what harm could occur. Just clean up the rubber grit particles. But it may work in the opposite way. On some Bridgeport mills the toothed belt works a notch into the top housing cover. That's the housing for the back gear.

William Kent, in his Mechanical Engineers Pocket Book of 1903, came up with this :D

" The pulley should be a little wider than the belt required to do the work. "
