Got it that time! Fantastic piece!

Oh yeah, says in the front of the book that you can get one from G&L for $5, ppd. Need to send them a letter with $5 enclosed and see if they send one back, lol.

I had the book but someone borrowed it and never brought it back. The book had the serial # of the machine it came with. Thanks for the copy.

..Whoever created this PDF file did an excellent job of scanning the original book...

Thanks, pretty sure that was me.
See this thread, post, and a few post above it.

I'm a little frustrated at this, having not noticed this thread earlier.

You see I paid to have this nicely scanned and I freely offered a PDF version to anyone who asked. In my reply providing the PDF to every request I asked/stated that it was "for your own use". Meaning read it and enjoy it yourself. I did not want to provide the file for anyone to sell or make a profit from or to take credit for the work.

If anyone else wanted it they only needed send me a PM.
I understand the book is not my property and I was kindly sharing it after investing my own time, effort, and money to make it available.

Unfortunately it's too late for me too go back to the post and edit the link out, but I should be able to remove the file from the link so there is nothing too download.

If you, as the guy who scanned it, wants me to do so, let me know.

I don't even remember who sent me the file or why, so if I was told to not spread it around, I long since forgot.

EDIT: Link has been disabled as per request, if interested in the scanned catalog please contact PM member Grigg.

Perhaps the OP should revert to his original plan, scan his grandathers copy, and release it to the internet. Then there would be no issues about using un-cited scans.

I would not stress over it.

I buy out of print books and bought a book scanner, scanned them in and have offered the links here and elsewhere for anyone to download. It has cost me a couple of hundred dollars so far. With no benefit to me other then thinking I am helping others out.

eg: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/46279918/shaping plaing slotting.pdf

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/46279918/Testing Machine Tools.pdf

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/46279918/Workshop Precision Grinding.pdf

I do not provide links to books you can buy new copies of though.

Right, it's not that big a deal. I was just surprised to find others offering up the same file I created and no mention where they got it.

Numerous of mine magically appear on VM. I suppose people feel entitled - and of course THEIR name shows up as the donor

Really encourages me to continue scanning the collection acquired over the last fifty years :rolleyes5:

Right there is the biggest problem with open source info without any citations.

How can we know? After a few iteations, the little add on story about who scanned it is long since forgotten or omitted. I'm not saying this to start an argument, just observing and pointing out a genuine problem.

I did mention where where I got it, but I got the file years ago and dont remember who sent it to me, and I'm 99% sure it was someone other than you. And if I was told you scanned it and not to share it with out permission, I long since forgot.

Had I scanned the PDF, and wanted to leave a mark on it, Id have added a title page or something to the scanned file. I've also seen PDF's of old manuals with little black labels at the bottom of every page saying who the document originally belonged too and who scanned it.

That way the guy like me, who is God knows how many iterations down the sharing chain, would see the label to not post/share without citing.

Citations aren't a big deal when its possible to do so, I have to do them for every paper, project or presentation I do AND submit the file to a website that checks the validity of the sources and my paper for plagiarized materials. If I don't and they can prove plagiarism, I get taken up on academic dishonesty, which is a HUGE deal in a university.

Had I found your amazing PDF, and needed to use it for an engineering project/presentation, I would not be able to because of the citation issues. I could cite G&L, but as we know, they didn't scan it and upload it.

Without that cover page, and without your explanation, your PDF is just another anonymous one.

But ill also add my thanks to the list, its a really cool PDF and id have probably never seen it had you not scanned it.

EDIT, JohnO types faster than I do and as his post says, is other example of the problem of tracing originality/ownership in a digital world.

I'm glad people find it useful, and happy to have made it available to others. I looked and hunted and couldn't find a single copy to buy and G&L didn't have one either, it's a very hard to find book full of good stuff.

Anyhow, I received many polite request for the file and the one thing I kindly asked in return was that the individuals enjoy it; for their own use.

Hello Grigg,
You may have seen my posts on my recently acquired G&L 25T. I have some video on youtube of it. Just search Kooldoozer. I am interested if any online material exists. If you have any links or Google drive files, I would be love to see them. If you are ever in Charlotte, please come by see my shop. I am also a Detroit enthusiast. I have a 3-53N that I am putting into my 1953 IHC truck.
Thanks.

G&L Handbook: Horizontal Boring, Drilling and Milling Machines and Their Application

Guys,

I stopped by my Grandpa's yesterday and found this old book:

View attachment 182852

This book is amazing. It starts out explaining all of the different components of the horizontal boring mill. It then goes on to explain all of the various types of tooling, fixturing, etc. At the end it show cases common applications for the horizontal boring mill along with some atypical cases.

Check out this picture:

And a description of figure 298:

How cool is that?

I hope to take this to work, scan the entire book as a PDF and send it to Keith Rucker to post on his website. This is a great book. I can't find an ISBN anywhere on it. It was actually written and published by Giddings & Lewis. Has anyone else ever seen this book before?
Would like a DVD copy of the books set up pictures and info if you can
Down load it on DVD disc.willing to pay for shipping and Disc.

If you Down load the whole book would be nice even it takes 2-3 DVD s
Thanks. Raymond Lee

I HAVE this book, and it is really fantastic. BUT it's been sitting on my bookshelf for about fifteen years. I DON'T want to sell it, but I would loan it out.

In 2002 I was high bidder on a Kearney and Trecker salesmans catalog- a binder with an advertising brochure of every Kearney and Trecker machine being produced in the early 1950's. Fantastic book.Full of information,. A guy in Minneapolis got hold of me, getting my contact info from Ebay. YES back in the good old days when Ebay weren't such jerks. He wanted to buy the book and I said I don't want to sell it. He bugged me on and off for a year or so, and I offered to just send it to him so he could look at it, and get it out of his system, I didn't care if he kept it for three months, or whatever, but I wanted it back. I sent it out UPS and that's the last I heard from him. He wouldn't answer his phone, wouldn't reply to letters. Never acknowledged receiving it, nor did he pay anything for shipping. This REALLY bugged me. A guy goes from being your best buddy, another machine tool junkie, to becoming invisible. I had to FLY to Cincinnati and it happened I could get a flight with a layover in Minneapolis. So on a Sunday morning, guess who shows up at a guys house demanding his Kearney and Trecker book back. That's right- me! I DID get it back with the schmuck groveling apologies, but by that point, I hated him.

So I'm NOT loaning a book out without a deposit. If someone really wants this book to look at, copy, admire or whatever, I'll let someone borrow it, but I DO want it returned, The book is in an old fashioned comb binder, but made of metal. Not sure how difficult it would be to disassemble. The entire book at that point could have nice copies made. I'm WAY too busy right now to mess with copying books however.
