Hardinge HLV-H DRO Travel Requirements

I'm looking into adding a 2 axis DRO onto my HLV-H. Brands aside, I noticed that Acu-rite calls for 7" on the cross slide, but Newall list 6", both use 20" along the bed. Should I be requesting 6" or 7" for my cross slide? Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

I’m not sure, why they have a 1” difference. I would assume the travels be the same regardless of the scale.

I’m going to measure the travel and add and inch, that way I have 0.50” on each end extra on the travel.

If you have a relatively recent lathe, they were fitted with mounting holes for accurate scales (front of bed, and right side of cross-slide). If something is mounted on the back of the bed, it will likely interfere with the taper-attachment.

The OEM Accurites on mine (mid-80's vintage HLVEM), are S/N 3852522206, the overall cross-slide travel measured via the DRO is 7.3" (till the nut disengages the screw), so you need at least 7" of measuring travel (the overall length of that (older model) scale is 12.25").

A friend of mine upgraded the original accurite scales a few years ago to new low profile compact ones; they looked good (used the same mounting holes I believe,).

Thanks for the info, my machine does not have the mounting holes. I think it may be a year or two older before they started to do that.
I ended up with 7.2" of travel, close enough I think. I plan on mounting the scale in the front so I can use the taper attachment.

The Acu-Rite has feed rate displayed the Newall doesn’t. Get glass scales. I sure like them on my HLV-H, you are able to hold some ridicules tolerances. I have the Newall on my BP bought them new, I was able to get a deal on them with the mag scales.
