Just finished install on our new Mikron! This machine is the first I’ve used with a Heidenhain 640, I’ve been working on the 530s for years.

The single feed/rapid override knob is BY FAR my favorite setup tool on any control I’ve ever used. It’s the end all be all safety knob.

As I’m playing with the machine today I noticed the feed and rapid have been split into two knobs. My initial reaction is I hate this. This is what fanuc does…

Is this actually a better way? What am I missing? Anyone who runs or has run both, how do you feel about this change?

I know on my 640 control Mikron under user parameters I can turn on "enable feed potentiometer as master" and it seems to work the same as my single knob machine. I personally like the addition of the separate rapid knob, and being able to run 100% feed and low rapids when I know I want to verify a tight clearance or retract type thing, but that also may be due to running lots of machines previously with that same setup.

my 530 has separate knobs
They have their purpose, for instance you may want to leave cutting alone so as to not mess up finish but slow the rapid out of the feature.
With the crazy rapids on my machines I don't mind the separate knobs

The thing that scares me are crazy feeds and fast rotary movement! I like feeling like I have infinite control of both with one hand. I also like to have my other hand on the coolant on/off

On the 640 is the potentiometer at least digital?

I hate when I walk over to our 530 and see that the spindle override is at 101% and the feedrate is at 99%. Move them carefully back to 100%, then when I walk by several hours later see that they have drifted slightly again... :willy_nilly:

Also, I find most operators are so used to having two knobs that they are constantly turning the spindle speed (instead of the feed) way down on accident when proving out programs...

i like separate knobs personally. you can limit your rapid feeds for when you're proving stuff out so you dont have to worry about controlling both knobs at the same time.
which mikron did you get?

Awesome great to know. A agree this is more “fanuc” style, which makes it more familiar. And I can see the advantages, but it feels high risk low reward I think. Also I always have multiple setup parts, so making sure I’m clear on my fist part is more important than getting accurate finishes and tolerances.

There is a feed rate and rapid over ride “over ride” I just learned about. When activated is essentially changes every position on the encoder from about 75-125 percent to read as 100% . So you can quickly and easily get to 100 percent without having to be so exact.

I love controlling both feed and rapid, programs switch back and forth so fast sometimes it’s nice to be able to stop all motion on a dime. Especially with more complicated true 5 work.

We got the Mill P 800 UD. It’s our second, the first being 530 control without the “D”

Not really how Fanuc does, but how builders using Fanuc controls choose to do overrides. Fanuc simply provides CNC input addresses from the PMC for overides . The machine builder can within their PMC ladder do with as they please. If one was creative (however impractical) they could be touch screen functions. My gut feeling is that most builders feel separate knobs are better.

I run an Index lathe with a Fanuc 21i-T control from the late 90s that has the single knob feed/rapid override and I love it. I find it very convenient.

I’ve been working with GF to try to find this functionality, they haven’t yet been able to figure it out. Would you mind telling where within user parameters this option is? I’ve got a ton of drop downs to look through. Thanks.

I will check when I get in tomorrow if they were not able to help you find it, but I think it is MOD hard key>"user parameters" touch screen> scroll down until "enable feed potentiometer as master" and change it to true. This is on a 640 Mill E, so I would be surprised if the Mill P does not have this option.

Thanks for the tip, sorry to Brian for not having the answer.
