Greetings everyone.
I am in the process of restoring an Elliot Progress 4E, and I am having major trouble with the spindle and quill extraction.
First off some house keeping:
1) I have searched this forum for potential matches, my 4E is not built like the newer 4E’s or 5E’s for which manuals are available.
2) I have reached out to Tony at lathes.co.uk and he confirmed he had no matches for early Elliot 4E’s.
3) This press was originally owned by a blacksmith (not kept inside), which was then sold to a machinist (kept inside). It was not well prepared to handle exterior moisture.
4) This being a British machine, the use of the taper as a fastening type (and philosophy) seems to be everywhere. The down feed appears to have some sort of tapered, almost collet like appearance such that I was unable to extract it and had to extract the entire down feed shaft.
The synopsis as far as I can tell is this:
1) The quill is likely bound by rust to the cast iron housing.
2) the spindle has a gear at the top that should
3)Move freely along the keyway but does not.
I have tried:
1) penetrating oil, heat, percussion, induction coil, bearing puller(s) wedging, and it’s currently suspended from a gantry with heat and penetrating oil to see if it will break any rust bonds…
2) I am 95% sure i have removed all binding set screws or pins.
Pictures included.
Any ideas?
