I think my search terms are no good. If I am broaching a hex drive socket into a bolt head how deep should it be? I know for nuts about 1.5 times diameter is the maximum thickness needed. Beyond that the threads will say intact but the bolt will break below the nut.
So should a hex recess be about 1.5 times the hex key diameter? To me that seems like a good guess Of course I am ignoring the extra round hole depth below the hex. That extra depth that allows the chip to curl when broached.
I know for rotary broaching there is a depth limit set by the angle geometry of the offset tool. I think it may be two times diameter.
