Stop. You don't need to justify the Hire of Mike to any one here. It's just not becoming.
I'd trust you to do the right thing as an employer.
Any thing else should stay between the 4 walls of your shop.

I find that if you treat people as you'd like to be treated yourself, you won't go far wrong. Just don't expect 100% reciprocation.
