First post looking for some insight as to any suggestions on where to look for new employees.

We are a gear manufacturer in Northern New Jersey. After almost 40 years of working for me my metal lathe man retired. I tried indeed years ago and when i posted looking for a machinist I had people saying they drive forklifts, or were receptionists absolutely no one with manual or cnc gear machine experience.

Has anyone had luck posting in the positions available forum here? Are there other forums for manual machinists? We have had luck with guys from other countries, most of my crew is Brazilian, but we have guys from Portugal, and Peru as well.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

With indeed, don't post an ad, search the CV database and message any candidates you're interested in.

Indeed's pricing structure has changed such that you only pay for candidates who aren't rejected in the first 72 hours. So while you have to be diligent in sifting through candidates, you won't have to pay for unqualified ones.

Hiring is a numbers game these days. If you expect to land a good employee after checking out 20 resumes, you're going to be disappointed. It's probably going to be closer to 100-500 candidates, from which 5-10% will pass phone screening and 2-3% will show up for in person interview. Also, the quality of the candidate pool fluctuates. You get what you get, and sometimes you gotta wait.

Nobody ever thought to have this guy help find and train his replacement?

Do any of them have suggestions for referrals?

You've already gone down that road, must be the pay or conditions in your shop.
Might as well as current employees to ask back at the homeland for "cousins".

He never indicated he was retiring until Jan this year. We have other guys that can do small jobs here and there but prefer a full time person to do the job.

We tried that. No luck yet

Not really sure what that's suppose to mean. The fact that everyone here had stayed with our company for over 20+ years must mean we are a pretty damn Good company to work for.

I guess there is one on every forum...

Good to post needs,
- Proficient in turning threads, running between centers, making ID and OD sizes, making taper parts, holding shaft step sizes, boring, Id threading...making a key way.
- Or just some lathe/machining experience, trainable, willing to listen to instructions, dependable to make it to work and keep busy.

Fellow NJ resident here.
I was recently (within the past year) looking for a job in NJ. I had recruiters calling me left and right. They found me from Linkedin and indeed.
That being said, Hire a recruiter. I got two jobs through Aerotek, they found me both times on Linkedin. Heck, i still get calls and I'm turning jobs down because I like where I'm at now.

It's an Employees market right now, and you must be competitive and fast to find the good workers. Competitive comes from your transparency of benefits and pay, but fast comes from constantly looking. As a business owner, I'm sure you don't have time to make phone calls all day and search the internet for new recruits, so pay someone to do it for you. A recruiter will have established connections and screening processes to find you exactly who you need. You're happy, your new employee is happy. It's a win win.

Just to add to my point about competitiveness. Please post your salary range and benefits Publicly. It's a waste of my time and yours to get people to setup an interview just to be let down or surprised by an unexpected situation. When I was looking, if there was no salary/hourly rate on the job posting, I'm not enquiring. I'm not going to waste my time with an interview for you to tell me it only pays $15/h, which is minimum wage here in NJ. Also, check your ratings on glassdoor, i'll leave it at that.
