I need to remove the apron on this Takisawa lathe; the keyed driveshaft has what looks like a clutch of some sort in line with the shaft. I removed setcrew that was threaded partially into the collar AND shaft (between them) with a spring underneath. There is a roll pin and another pin in the unit, but before I go driving the pins out I figure I'd see if anyone has been down this road yet. Carriage must come off to replace the gear that engages the rack up under the front way, and the keyway in the shaft does not extend all the way to the tailstock end so I think I need to remove the driveshaft from the tailstock end of the apron.

I am surprised no one has answered yet. It is simple. The spring / ball / set screw is a safety device so if you have a crash the ball pushes the spring back and turns. If it wasn't there you would break a gear in the quick change or carriage. . I would remove the spring pin and if the other is a taper pin, remove them and then take off the right hand side shaft bracket and then pull the shaft out of the left side bushings. There is probably another pin on the . Or it may be something else. If your mechanically inclined it should be simple to figure out. Under the spring you will find a ball bearing. Inside the carriage the shaft with the keyway goes through a pinion gear that powers the carriage. Many times the key in the pinion gear is worn thin and you will need to replace it. The bushing on each end of the carriage that hold the shaft straight are probably worn too,

Thanks for the info. Wasn't sure what was under that spring. I've got some other stuff ahead of that job but will post some pics when I get a chance to take it apart
