How to fix worn pinion bore in apron?

yup its right up there with the hydraulic distributor that was on some of the tucker cars that operated the valves

Thought I would post a follow up.

My solution was to ream the apron oversize and turn an oversize shaft on the lathe. Reaming the apron. for some reason the picture is upside down.


It turns out that the heavy 10 pinion and the 9" pinion are the same(thanks Latheman) except that the 9" version is pinned to the shaft and has a 5/8" bore.


Turn the shaft down to the fit the oversize apron. Turn one end of the shaft down to 5/8" creating a step in the shaft. Then press on the pinion gear - it is an interference fit- and cut off the extra.

Locate the gear on the shaft and drill a hole for the pin. Fortunately I had the correct reamer for the taper pin.




The closer fitting pinion meant a shim had to be removed from under the rack, but once this was done there is very little play in the handwheel and the carriage travels smoothly.
