How to move on from a vital position?

1) Identify the job responsibilities that make you a great employee, and that you enjoy doing and have kept you there (likely already know this)
2) Identify the factors that have you dissatisfied enough you are contemplating leaving (too little pay? too many hours? what have you)

• Start hunting for a new job that will take care of BOTH of the above points, the first to be met, the second not present.

Decision Point, either before you start looking or once you find something, I don't know which: Talk to your current Boss and let him know what it's going to take to keep you there.

The response you get from him will guide you.

If you think the company is going to fail, that sort of trumps all.

Very good point. I wonder if my situation is fairly common - driven employees become stagnant in un-engaging jobs, and move on to places that are forward thinking and reward that drive, instead of grinding it down.
