KIA lathe - Fanuc OiTB control - tapping issues

I set up a job and ran 1,200+ pieces, tapping on center in my lathe. 3/8-24 in 304ss.

After a drill and tap combo broke...I have been having nothing but problems. I've broken 6 taps since...most of them breaking on the first hole.

I went through everything in the setup that I can think of. The hole is good, new taps, indicated everything in.

I've come the the conclusion my machine is to blame. It looks like it hiccups as it reverses direction.

The belt was replaced not long ago, I cleaned the brakes (although, I don't think those even engage).

Any ideas of where to look while I wait for the dealer to call me back?

Yeah, I know what to look for - form taps!
You don't typically use cut taps in 304 unless you are standing there with a 5 gal bucket of some sorta snot to pour on the tap by hand just prior to the routine.

And a DRAP just doesn't instill the feeling of high end tooling.
???

I typically use OSG form taps simply b/c that is what my local supplier stocks the most of, and they always run hot in 304. Then recently I broke my last tap and I looked around for what else may be squirelled away somewhere, and I came up with an old box of Jarvis Jarflo taps, and I stuck one of those in there, and the heat was gone and it ran way better. I have not had application to duplicate that experience yet, but I think that I need to git in some more Jarvis taps!

This is a rigid tap setup. I broke form and cut taps...nothing was working.

It ended up being the belt was slipping even though it was new in January and installed by the dealer.

Tightened it up and we're back in business.

I may have to check out Jarvis taps....don't think I ever heard of them.

I learnt sumthin tho - the tell-tale sign of the belt slipping is... Run the machine at ***rpm. Program an M5. If the spindle stops for a second and continues to coast a few rotations afterwards, the belt is slipping and needs to be tightened.
