Making sense of Grainger threaded rod

I'm looking for some good quality 7/16-20 threaded rod to repair a puller. Needs tensile strength and wear resistance. It gets a lot of abuse with a hammer drill. Also need a nut. Grainger sells lots of different steels, and all have the same description. Does anyone speak Grainger and can suggest which one would work best?

You'd probably have a lot better luck with McMaster-Carr, because they will give you strength details. At least you can use mcMaster's site as a crib sheet for buying from Grainger (or Zoro?). B7 grade material is like typical quality T-slot stud material, to give you a reference point. I would stay away from stainless steels in your application.

Threaded rods featuring a white color code are the strongest. The second-strongest color code is red, which is made of A4 stainless steel. The third-strongest color code for threaded fasteners is green, which is made of A2 stainless steel. Coming in fourth and five is yellow and unmarked, respectively.

Not my words but a start...

With stainless maybe a coating of Optimoly Paste might work. But I've been galled before and I don't like it.

The B7. It translates to to ASTM A193 B7. The nuts are ASTM A194 2H. Really good tuff stuff. McMaster makes it easy
In their catalog 126, rod is on page 3353 and the 2H nuts are on page 3385

And I presume you've looked at the existing part carefully to be sure it's a standard thread.. At least one of my pullers, on close inspection, was a buttress thread.

Yeeeep. It's essentially thread rolled 4140ht. It's a treat to machine should you need it. To hell with the rest of the options.

I've heard their ads on the radio a few times. Plus they have their public distribution centers where people can go to pick up items.

I've never once seen an ad for McMaster, not that they really need it with as strong of a word-of-mouth presence as they have. Plus I don't know if you can go to a McMaster distribution center to get anything, as far as most people know you just order from them and an angel brings it to you the next day.

I've heard a lot of their ads as well, and none from McMaster. In this day and age, a strong website beats 15 second radio blurbs in my book.

If I go to McMaster, I can easily find what I'm looking for, and what spec it confirms to.

Going to Grainger's website is like a DIY colonoscopy.

You can will call at the McM centers.

I'm 15 mins drive from the Santa Fe Springs warehouse, and go their frequently, it's open on Sundays as well, and I've been there on a Sunday numerous times, very usefull.

Now that gas is so expensive it's about the same price to ship the majority of items I order, as the gas to drive the 30 mins round trip. Order early enough and I'll get it same day.
