Does anyone with a Schaublin 102 know if and where you can get parts and possibly a service manual for an older 102 VM? I am looking into picking one of these up, but I want to make sure that I am not going to end up with a 2k lb chunk of iron down the road.

I have a Schaublin 102. Here are two sources for parts, new and used, in the USA.

Richlin Machinery
(home of Omniturn)
40 Allen Blvd., Farmingdale NY 11735 - (631) 694-9400
Irving Richlin, owner

I have bought tailstock, chuck and collets from them.
They have pretty good stock of used & sometimes new
parts and accessories for this lathe, plus used machines

The collet and tool holder operation (under American ownership)
is named SCHAUBLIN SA. The lathe building operation
(still under Swiss ownership) is named SCHAUBLIN Machines SA. http://www.SMSA.ch

From a post by Dave to the schaublinlathes forum:

"I established and have been managing the U.S. subsidiary for SCHAUBLIN SA
for the past eight years and, after the break up of the firm in
Switzerland, I continue as president of SCHAUBLIN USA as well as manage
my own firm, DA Swiss Inc., representing SCHAUBLIN Machines SA.

I have a 102 manual I could copy in case you don't find one elsewhere.

Fair to middlin' -- barely a notch or so above Grizzly & Atlas. :D You don't suppose the folks who know how to make really nice watches and cheese also know how to make really nice machine tools?

Well, how else would they make really fine watches without using really fine machines :)

LFL, Thanks for the info. BTW, aren't these supposed to be nice lathes?

Very. And very expensive, same for parts and accessories. You sometimes see
used accessories on Ebay. Join the Schaublin forum on PM and the one on Yahoo, read about them and learn what you need to know. Mine came out of a large machine shop on Long Island. I paid about 2500$ for it delivered but it came with compound, turret, crossslide, a lots of collets, drill chucks, miscellaneous tooling and small accessories. I later bought more collets, two chucks and a tailstock for it. It is a very well made, durable machine. The motor and drive train is massive as is the cabinet, compared to the size of the lathe.

I have adapted an AXA QCTP for it. I bought a modified T Bolt to fit the T Slot on the compound and a downsized AXA toolholder, all from Aloris , so I could get the required center height.
This is a worthwhile upgrade from the rocker toolpost that came with my machine.

I found one but it is missing most of the gears as well as the tool post. They are asking $2k which I believe is way too much. I need to see if I can find replacement gears. I know which ones are missing. Anyone have any idea if these can be purchased from Boston Gear or some of the other gear manufactures?

The below company can supply scarfed belts to your specficied length, and will include special adhesive to join without need of press (other than bench vise) or heat. Many belt materials to choose, from leather to the most high tech materials. They supply the endless flat belts for production routers that turn 20,000 RPM and more, for example. They are also a good source of bandsaw tires...endless or scarfed.
