Metric Thread Cutting on Graziano SAG12

I do a good bit of even number TPI standard thread cutting on my SAG12 but now I have some metric threads that I need to cut up to a shoulder

Can I proceed in the same manner as I do while cutting standard threads or do I need to keep the same number on the thread counter or do I need to keep the half nuts closed once I start cutting?

Not that it matters but I need to cut M12x1.5

There are options to Ray's good comment. I won't rewrite it all here. STF on metric threading, and you will uncover many many descriptions.
Note: It has to do with catching the threading dial on the reverse path after disengaging the half nuts as you pull out.

Good luck with your search and threading!

PS Practice what ever method you choose. ;-)

Thanks guys for your response.

I tell you. Threading up to the shoulder like this you have to really be quick with the stop and carriage. But it works

I accepted long ago that threading to a shoulder adds nothing to strength or security of any fastening.
It's a stress riser at best, and a jambing wedge regardless. But, some folks think it's a better way.
Perhaps if one is running a machine screw into thin wall tubing, but why?

Still, all threads run into a "shoulder" of some kind. Eventually you need to pull out and stop the feed. It's only a matter of degree.

A DTI makes hitting the end a lot easier for me. And a VFD with the braking function helps out as well.
