Wouldn't a cap/bridge on top be a way to get a lot of extra rigidity?

Bosley,
Absolutely! I had already drilled and tapped holes in the top of the bars figuring I'd do that. The problem is, I was so hot to trot to get this thing going, I neglected to do just that.

Gatz,
I've always tapped with a chuck. The reason I said that, was for the benefit of a member here. He saw me doing that and went nuts. I won't mention any names, like Jeff B. or anything though.

Hey, sorry, I should have figured. Forgot to say that this is really terrific work! Jim

Re tying the top ends of the bars together:

I think you'll get more rigidity by using a block like you have at the bottom, rather than bolting a plate on the ends. A split clamp would be easier to put on and take off if needed.

wesg,
Hmmm, I like that. Enough to do it!.....thanks

jkilroy,
The problem is as usual, I never made more than a few sketches on paper to build this monstrosity. However, I'll do anything I can to help you with it. Hey, I'm still in the 18th century when it comes to Cad and stuff. I'll see if a friend of mine would help me out with that.
