Mitutoyo digital indicator error question

I've got a Mitutoyo 543-472B 0.5"-0", 0.0001" indicator that's acting up, it's a long shot but, figured I'd see if anyone here has encountered this.

What happens is the least significant digit will blink "E" occasionally, and the 2nd digit will jump to a "1" even if the gage is measuring in the thousands or tenths. When recording data using the SPC interface those "1" spikes show up in the data values.

I have replaced the battery which is about the only thing I can serviceably do. The unit has not been subject to physical abuse, nor exposed to oils, coolant etc. Mitutoyo quoted me around $200 to repair it, "if repairable". I'd have to pay $60 plus shipping for them to diagnose it and tell me it's not repairable.

Anyone here ever seen this issue and if so, how was it resolved?

Thanks.

This doesn't solve your issue, and was written about calipers, but I would assume the same to be true with all their digitimatic stuff.

So if it's considered "late model", indicates dirty, while earlier ones suggest it was moved too fast? Again, that was for calipers.

Sorry that's not a solution.

Have you held the origin button once the battery was installed?

I have reset the origin after replacing the battery.

I opened the back of the unit to see if there's anything to clean; it's way above my pay grade in there.
