Monarch 10ee spindle repeatedly starts and stops.

Hello, New to the forum. I have a 1951 Monarch 10EE. SN 33558. I have used it sparingly for the last year and it has worked flawlessly. Unfortunately the spindle will not keep running.
It repeatedly starts and stops regardless of rotation or speed setting. The spindle will start for a few seconds and stop for a few seconds. This continues until the spindle is turned off.
If I adjust the spindle speed higher the cycle happens more rapidly. The AC motor is running smoothly. I removed the covers and found the DC motor starts are opening and closing.
(forward starter when in forward rotation and reverse starter when switched into the reverse rotation. This last time as I was making a video it started smoking as I was adjusting the speed
control. I looked for quite a while on this site and others hoping to find an answer so if this is an old topic I missed I apologize. I have also looked for a wiring schematic for this machine with
no luck. Is there a site I can purchase a manual and wiring schematic for a 1951 10EE? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

That's a classic symptom of a bad 2000 Ohm "B-E" resistor in the upper-right corner of the DC control panel. (That's actually about the only problem that panel has.) Fortunately, it's an easy fix. A new resistor costs about $12. The other two resistors next to it should be replaced as well. See this link:

Thanks Cal! I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I have ordered the
resistors and will reply with the results.
