Getting closer

Been working on the lathe a bit more. Got the new gib for the cross slide from Grizzly. Had to mill the slot in it for the screw head. Cleaned up the Buck Adjustable chuck that came with the lathe. Going to grind the jaws once all is together.

Treat it to a new gib screw. High mileage lathes like that tend to have those pretty badly roughed up.

Also be aware there's a lock screw that comes in from the *side* to keep the screw from moving. Often
this is painted over and tough to find.

Just curious :scratchchin:
How much $$ was the gib from grizzly?

Well, beginning to wonder if this thing is worth messing with (again). Put the chuck on the spindle and it runs out...face wobbles. Took the spindle out and put between centers. Not good. Looks like it may have warped when I had the cam shop weld and grind it, because it's not concentric either. So, since I have more time than money, will be making a new one myself. Got a scrap part pr two at the shop big enough, 4340 HT steel. Got a start on it Saturday, got a little farther today.

But since he is making it, it CAN be MT5....I still would have gone Jarno..:)

Screw Morse!!! Just because they couldn't hold a tolerance we all suffer.

Started to leave it straight. It is a #5. A #3 sleeve drops right through. I have the 1 3/8 spindle bore, which I am debating making it up to 1 1/2. Plenty of meat there. Probably go 1 7/16 anyway. I doubt the MT will ever get used, by me anyway. I have already made a 5c collet nose for it that will be used.

Alrighty, got the new spindle installed. Smooth as silk. Next item to find or repair is the reverse tumbler. One of the two smaller gears has pretty thin teeth. It works but is noisy as hell when engaged. There is also some slop in how it mounts. It had a broken 'tab' where the plate holds it in place on the headstock. I brazed it up and remachined it, but made it a little too loose. Anyway, replacing the whole tumbler assembly is probably the best route, so any body got one laying around? :)

I think I'm going to carry that picture in my phone, so that when someone shows me a Krylon rebuild, I can pull that out and say "No, THIS is a rebuild".

To each his own. Looks good, though. I wasn't interested in the looking like new, never have been. Just working good. The old patina has a neat look itself.

I lean more in your direction, but we have so many paint jobs around here.

I asked a guy what kind of paint was used because I had to know how difficult it would be to remove it.

I don't think he was amused.
