My first Hendey 12x5 ECM

Hey guys, I just picked up my first big boy lathe, a Hendey ECM 12x5. She appears to be in great shape with minimal wear, but the headstock is very tight, I'm sure due to the adjusters being cranked down. I will start the tear down soon. Serial #26588 if Hendeyman is looking. The p/o said he purchased this lathe from a shop his uncle worked for where it was used for many years.

She came with this box, which the p/o told me was a rare find.

He also did a very nice job with paint and to add contrast with nicely turned brass spheres to replace the factory oil point screws. Still have to order a VFD to get it powered up, but I think the spindle is the first thing to tackle. I was looking at an 11" Precision Mathews before I found this American classic. Should be worth the extra time in the end. This is an amazing machine that I am proud to have in my home shop. P

but the headstock is very tight
Common Hendey ailment - not something you adjust but FIX when you have it apart. Here are some related scans, though for a cone head

I'll measure later but that sounds about right. The motor mounts where you see it. I was under the impression thats where all ebm and ecm motors were located.

Thanks for that great breakdown. I am hoping I just need to shim it out as I have read. I was really happy when I found it has the tapered bushings as I am hoping to use the machine for turning precision fit bores and pistons. From what I understand it should not leave the impression of the spindle bearing like some others.

More related scans ( though EBM)

Good stuff! The machine came with a gearhead manual so I'm looking for a full ebm/ecm manual.
