320A?

What the heck is that?

I don't understand hoops with 400, but ....
Sounds strange....

Sounds like his utility co isn't blowing smoke like most of them do.

A 2 minute conversation with engineer at my utility concluded that they can hang 3 real 50KVA transformers on my pole for a real, continuous rating of 361 amps at 240V and for a very low cost. If I want more than that my wallet was going to hurt. He told me in no uncertain terms there's no such thing as a nice neat 400 amp service. Doesn't work that way. Those are just ratings on the equipment, not what you actually get.

Makes sense to me.

Well, OK, but he also said 208, so ...

But how doo you git there?

a 400A incoming panel with 320 main fuses?

You could still have one 400A buss line with that.

I highly cornfused as to how his entranceway is split up that you can hang 2x 200's - but not a single 400.

???

Three 40kVA transformers will give you 333 amps at 208 volts.

Now I'm not very good when it comes to electricity and how this all works, but from what I understand, each busway has access to all 320 amps.

Each bus has a 200 amp main breaker in the panel, and then the bus boxes for each machine have the appropriate breaker size based on the full load amps per the machine tag.

When I get back up there later in the week I'll ask the electrician how it all works, so we can all have a better understanding.
