Hi
Over the past year or so, my gearbox has started leaking too much oil.
I finally decided I needed to fix the leaks. That requires removing the gearbox.
Here are some photos.
This is the lathe as delivered before any modifications.

Here is the gearbox with the front cover removed for the first time a few years ago.
I cleaned all of the sediment out and changed the oil.

The gap where the gearbox was removed from the lathe today.

Another photo showing the lathe output shaft (top), jack shaft, and the gap where the gearbox input shaft is located.

I had to remove the end bracket to release the shafts from the gearbox. Note I have added an e-stop at the tail stock end. Originally the lathe did not have an e-stop. Now it has two.

The rear view of the gearbox. Note the black sealant. I don't know what type of sealant it is, but it looks like bitumen. I suspect the modern oil has softened the sealant, causing leaks.

Another shot of the rear of the gearbox showing the input shaft.

I covered the gears with foil to keep out the sealant I scraped off.
