Why don't you just mill your own "misaligned" base that fits your reciever holes but puts the scope in proper alignment with the bore. Your a machinist right? You don't have to use a commercially made base.

When did I ever claim to be a machinist?

I am a guy that loves Mauser rifles - just because.

And I do not like butcher work.

A question for you seriously skilled machinists.

Suppose the holes could be aligned correctly if I went to 8-40 screws as opposed to the 6-48 screws. Is it possible to bore the correct size .1405" hole, for the 8-40 tap, manually (milling machine), without the hole drifting, on a poor man's budget? If so, how?
0.1405 is close to 9/64. I use a 1/8 center-cutting carbide endmill then a 9/64 chucking reamer. The endmill ensures a straight cut even if the original hole was off center. The chucking reamer ensures that the hole doesn't go oversize like a 9/64 EM might.

cant find any data on any of those sizes, guessing they dont exist commonly. in an ultra fine range, but who knows. are you just getting random information from the internet on sizes?

6-48 and 8-40 are common sizes for gunsmithing- scope bases, front and rear iron sight bases, etc. Going up a size from 6-48 to 8-40 is very common when somebody fudges the scope base hole threads up with Loctite or decides tighter is better and strips the threads out.

I've had to learn through hard won experience to always use my Seekonk dial-type certified inch-pound torque driver for all gun screws...
