Need help identifying this 22" Lodge and Shipley

Hello and thanks in advance,

We have a 22" Lodge and Shipley we use for regular production in our shop and need to do some work on it. But, I'm having trouble identifying it.

So far, it seems to be a 22" Selective Head Engine Lathe, because it has the double flat guideways and the headstock as the little access cover on the very front top. Its most similar to this brochure

And finally, the infamous

which we were poking around adjusting.

The odd thing is, I've been in contact with the support folks at Monarch and they say that 44172, the number cast into the headstock is not the serial number of this machine, they say it is a shear. Where would the serial number be on this unit?

The numbers you have pictured are somebodies old inventory tag riveted on. It has just been painted over and looks like it is part of the casting.

The serial number should be stamped into the metal between the saddle and tailstock way at the front (or maybe back?) right hand (tail end) side of the bed.

Absolutely in back - right end on top, stamped into machined cast iron in between two rear ways

Lathe is a Model X - and the 22" was the "big one" pre war

Serials about 31,000 and up

Specs as of January 1937
