Before I start, is there any good place to find a manual to read how to operate this machine? Would love to read on my own to learn the basics. After my machine was delivered I pretty much haven't heard a peep from Ellison. My buddy and I spent all evening trying to figure out how to do basic tasks. I learned on a Haas and he uses them, among others at his day job. It was pretty painful just trying to do basic tasks!
  • Any way to keep MDI from deleting/reseting code after resetting/canceling alarms?
  • Is there any simple way to get into MDI? There's S1/S2 then double tap the program button. It's confusing. Anything easier or more recallable?
  • When running M102, is it supposed to be slow? I ran M102 from MDI and the spindle rotated slowly for about two minutes.
  • Is there any simple way to change tools? I am just using MDI to change the tool. Are there any shortcuts like on the Haas when you're in MDI and just type Tx and hit ATC FWD.
  • Are there any ATC fwd/back buttons that I am missing?
  • GUI/Rennishaw menu/app will randomly crashes and keeps kicking me out of the app until I turn the machine off and on again.
  • Is there any way to write the current machine position to a work offset? I am only able to manually input it. Anything similar to the Haas controller where you press "measure" on the work offset page?
  • Spindle off button (red) what does this do? I press it and it doesn't do anything
  • What do you need to do to re-run a program that doesn't finish (for example, hit reset mid-tool setting or mid-MDI). We see a combo of of a 2042 error that complains about starting from the middle?
  • When the tool setting macro errors out, how do you reset this? It appears that it thinks it is mid-tool change. We were only able reset this by going into MDI, changing tools, then recalling our same tool. Reset button and machine alarm reset did nothing.
  • What is the correct way to set the length only for example a facemill. It asks for diameter, but not length (like a Haas would). How does it know where to rapid and start feeding?
  • Can you not edit open programs?
  • Is there a specific filename for programs off USB? I exported a File.NC from Mastercam and USB wouldn't accept the file.
  • Is setting 1301 bit 4 to 1 the correct way to cancel soft overtravel alarms without hard resetting once you're back in bounds
Thank you!

Also, @LockNut who is a current DN/Doosan A/E is onboard here as well.

What model machine? Control?
I shy away from the new iHMI interface, as I really don't like it. You can disable it by pressing the "System" (S2) button which will turn it off, then press any of the control hard keys such as program, MDI, offset, etc to get where you want to go. Pressing the "Custom" or S1 button or the checkerboard button reinstates the iHMI.
There are probably other ways too, but I find these the fastest for me.

M102 may rotate slowly, as it's really just getting a little grease back on the bearings. It behaves like that on a number of DN/Doosan mills I've seen.

Tool change can be instated via Ren/Gui or MDI.

When re-starting, the "are you sure?" alarm comes up, but another tap of the cycle start will send the machine on its way. BE CAREFUL.

I felt the same way for a while when I started on Fanuc then it becomes second nature. You'll get there as you use it more but it will always be inconvenient compared to Haas or others.. The thing with Fanuc that's just something to expect is lots of button presses. I'm constantly surprised by how many button presses it takes to do simple tasks. It's a regular game of navigating through tabs and menus.

I'll answer what I can below to get you started but others will be much more knowledgeable on your setup.

  • Is there any simple way to get into MDI? There's S1/S2 then double tap the program button. It's confusing. Anything easier or more recallable?
I think by double tapping the program button you are scrolling through tabs in the classic interface. Hitting the MDI mode hard key after "S1" might take you straight there. I can't remember.

No, and no. Running MDI programs to do basic tasks is pretty much going to be another part of the Fanuc game.

  • GUI/Rennishaw menu/app will randomly crashes and keeps kicking me out of the app until I turn the machine off and on again.
This sounds like some kind of bug that you should talk to the distributor about. The iHMI controls are still a little rough around the edges so there might be some software updates to remedy this. There was an update a few months ago to fix some issues with FTP file access and other minor inconsistencies.

  • Spindle off button (red) what does this do? I press it and it doesn't do anything
MTBs will set this functionality up differently so it's hard to say. Typically if you start the spindle in manual mode after programming a speed in MDI, this should stop it.

  • What do you need to do to re-run a program that doesn't finish (for example, hit reset mid-tool setting or mid-MDI). We see a combo of of a 2042 error that complains about starting from the middle?
There is a setting on some models of control to start the program from anywhere. I'm not sure if your control has that but it might have to be turned on. Haas has a similar thing like "program restart" Regardless, you need to be in the program view and hit the rewind softkey to go back to the top after a reset otherwise it will make you double check that actually want to start in the middle. There is a parameter on some controls to make the program auto-rewind on reset but you'll have to look it up.

  • Is there a specific filename for programs off USB? I exported a File.NC from Mastercam and USB wouldn't accept the file.
I think the Fanuc NC programs need to be without an extension. This is at least the case on older Fanuc machines. I can't remember if it's that way on the iHMI generation of controls. This also might not be the problem you're describing.

  • Is setting 1301 bit 4 to 1 the correct way to cancel soft overtravel alarms without hard resetting once you're back in bounds
This sounds like another MTB specific thing. Info on your machine will help figure out the intended behavior.

There are some parameters to control over travel behaviors:
Setting parameter #1300 bit 1(NAL) to 1 will stop alarms in handle jog.

MDI behavior:
Parameter 3203 bit 7(MCL)=0 MDI not cleared in reset.
Paremeter 3203 bit 6(MER)=1 last block in MDI not cleared after execution in single block
Parameter 3204 bit 6(MKP)=1 MDI program not cleared when M02, M30 or % executed
Parameter 3101 bit 1(KBF)=1 MDI does not clear when switching modes.
These parameters are valid for the doosan Oi and a 31i control

  • Any way to keep MDI from deleting/reseting code after resetting/canceling alarms? Parameter. Already stated in another response
  • Is there any simple way to get into MDI? There's S1/S2 then double tap the program button. It's confusing. Anything easier or more recallable?
  • When running M102, is it supposed to be slow? I ran M102 from MDI and the spindle rotated slowly for about two minutes. Yes, just getting the bearings wet.
If a GUI cycle is stopped without finishing, it is expecting an M30. MDI an M30 and shutting down is not needed.
  • Is there any way to write the current machine position to a work offset? I am only able to manually input it. Anything similar to the Haas controller where you press "measure" on the work offset page?
  • Spindle off button (red) what does this do? I press it and it doesn't do anything. You need to be in some manual setting, like Handwheel mode. Pressing STOP will stop the spindle.
  • What do you need to do to re-run a program that doesn't finish (for example, hit reset mid-tool setting or mid-MDI). We see a combo of of a 2042 error that complains about starting from the middle? You should restart from a Tool Change or somewhere sensible. If it asks if you are sure, press Cycle Start again. Be careful.
  • When the tool setting macro errors out, how do you reset this? It appears that it thinks it is mid-tool change. We were only able reset this by going into MDI, changing tools, then recalling our same tool. Reset button and machine alarm reset did nothing. Reset and then MDI an M30.
  • What is the correct way to set the length only for example a facemill. It asks for diameter, but not length (like a Haas would). How does it know where to rapid and start feeding? You cannot measure a facemill without giving a diameter because it will move off center to measue the teeth. You don't want it measuring at the center of the cutter.
  • Can you not edit open programs?
  • Is there a specific filename for programs off USB? I exported a File.NC from Mastercam and USB wouldn't accept the file. From the legacy side the control expects to see O????, no extensions. From the iHMI side, files names up to 30 characters are OK as are extensions. Pick your poison.
  • Is setting 1301 bit 4 to 1 the correct way to cancel soft overtravel alarms without hard resetting once you're back in bounds
Thank you!
I answered the easy ones. I suggest you wait for training from Ellison. They will show you all of the tricks to this control. Patience is a virtue.

Thank you, this is helpful for my DEM 4000, too. One issue I ran into is that the control won't paste a program to a CF card. It seems to paste to USB just fine. The CF card is formatted FAT32 and I am pointing to it as a CF device, not CF_mem device. BTW, where does one get the FANUCPRG.EXE program to set up a CF card as editable program memory? Distributor?

Oh, sorry I left that out! It's a new DNM 4500 with the standard iHMI controller (not sure which version.

Ah, I think I was originally led down the wrong path. I was told that pressing S1/S2 was a way to "select" the option printed below the hardkey.

M102 may rotate slowly, as it's really just getting a little grease back on the bearings. It behaves like that on a number of DN/Doosan mills I've seen.
Good to know about the M102, that's what we were guessing.

MDI is what we're using now. In RenGui what option do you use?

When re-starting, the "are you sure?" alarm comes up, but another tap of the cycle start will send the machine on its way. BE CAREFUL.

I'll try to do this again and press cycle start again. We might have just pressed "reset". I think we also saw this when we tried to set the Len/Dia with a face mill in RenGUI and it errored out and got stuck mid-program. Reset and repeated cycle starts didn't help here.

I think here that the I/O channel must be set to 4, for the CF Card and set to 17, for the USB.

Thank you, appreciate it. Unfortunately I have a less than stellar experience with Ellison at the moment. We were best friends until I cut them a check.

Have you, or do you have plans on setting up ethernet? Wondering if there are any special steps involved there.

Sorry Richard, I missed the second part of this question. Yes, you should get it from your distributor, this is the easiest. You could initiate it through Fanuc if you would like but I have no idea of the particulars there. I always tell people to get it from their dealer. From the Fanuc Oi-MD forward, this option is standard on all of our controls and you just need to buy the software. Last time I checked it was less than $100. I have used this numerous times and it works beautifully compared to just using M198 to call a program from a card.

FINALLY figured out how to reset the tool setter if it aborts or fails. Put together a short video, will link it once it's uploaded.

To answer my previous question about length only toolsetting. My operation was failing because of another previously failed probe op where it couldn't find the surface. I was able to provide the facemill length correctly today.

Also found another odd behiavor...G28 X0 Y0 Z0 sends the table to the machine home. It also sends the spindle to the table...??

G53 X15. Y0 will likely put your table front and center - depending on where your machine HOMES at.

Where Z goes in that scenario may depend on if your machine has Z HOME at 24" or 0".
I much prefer my mills to be configured so that Z0 is the spindle flush with the table, but many don't set them up that way.

Will give this a try too.
