Hello all, new member here and thanks to all who post about their Abene mills. I've owned a worn, functional VHF2 for a few years now and recently picked up a VHF3 project. The VHF3 is missing the feed speed transmission and my intention is to use the one from the VHF2, despite the single vernier speed indicator. However, the 2 uses a single V belt and the 3 uses a flat belt. I'm likely going to have to make one or both pulleys so...I'm asking if anyone has any pictures and/or dimensions of their VHF3 feed drive pulleys. Flat belt? Single or dual V belts? Thanks.

Just had shoulder surgery so not going to the shop. Once I get back at it I will try and at least get some photos if nobody else has chimed in before that.

So if i was going to setup a drive fro that machine spindle, I would go with a "polly-V " belt arrangement.
Lots of off the shelf choices to make the needed drive ratio, you can even roll yer own.

Really don't need the dimensions of the pulleys on other Abene models....
You should know the spindle speeds....(Chart on the machine) Shift to top gear and count the input turns to the output turns (spindle) ...that will establish the gear ratio.
Note: i would use multi turns of the lower speed shaft (assume it would be the input shaft when in top gear) so as to hedge against missing the count on fractional turns...
You know the motor RPM , soooo a bit of math and you will have the needed input RPM on the input shaft, then its just a matter of combining the pulley diameters
on the motor and input shaft to get the desired result...Make sure that the desired ratio can have a belt that will fit in the machines physical layout....You can juggle the motor and input diameters to arrive at a
belt length that works in the space ...

Ross, thank you for the recommendations for the spindle drive set up. However, I'm currently looking for info and/or pics of the X, Y, Z power feed motor and gearbox pulley. I could probably employ the same fundamentals but I'd like to see original VHF3 flat and V belt setups to decide which style to make. I currently have a VHF3 motor flat style pulley and both VHF2 motor and gearbox V style pulleys, single groove.

My belief is that the flat belt arrangement is there as a safety (fuse)
Belt will slip when loads get too high of if there is a crash....
Monarch EE's use this setup for feeds (not threading) and it works just fine

Sorry ,missed the fact that you were doing the feeds....
Here the safety trumps the "V" belts....Abene knew what they were doing...If the flat belt can be sourced, i would go with that setup.

More modern setup would use a torque limiting hub on the motor or input shaft and cog or Poly-Vee belts.
Deckel FP-NC's have positive break away clutches on all the axis screws...Positive engagement till the threshold is reached, then it slips. When it slips the control senses the halt in movement and initiates an E-stop

From what you can tell, is it recessed in the center for the capture bolt?
Curious, what serial range is your machine? Mine is 4217.

I am not sure. I will try and get a mirror up in there and see how it is retained. Mine is #3776. Made in 1966 if I remember.

There it is! Your pictures should provide me enough to make something close. Hardest part will be cutting the keyway. I'll share some pics of my finished product when it happens. Thanks again and go easy on that shoulder.

Well, I was able to get a pulley made this week. I used the original V groove pulley as a keyed hub for a flat belt pulley. Made a belt out of an old piece of leather and the mill is running. Haven't figured out how to post a picture yet.

Here's a few pics of the pulley. I used the original V pulley as a hub.
Homemade leather belt for now.
