Not a lot to update on the ole scrap I/M.
I picked up all the parts for the speed control, just waiting on the potentiometer to get here then I can put it in.

The guy that was nice enough to pick up the lathe from the scrap yard for me kept the forward/reverse drum switch. He sent me pics of what it looked like and let me know which terminals were closed in left, center, and right positions. I figure this was probably the original switch. Monarch wanted 900 for a new one so I ended up getting NOS off ebay. It had 4 stops instead of three and the connectivity between terminals wasn't right, so I took it apart and changed it to 3 stop and changed the plastic pieces so that it matched what the original switch did.

Now I just need to mount to the round mounting plate and make the piece that attaches to the shaft.

Once I get this done I should be able to put power to it and see what happens.

Picked up a couple other extras. A steady rest and cabinet with some goodies in it. All the collets are 2j but unfortunately they left the 2j chuck on the lathe at auction. I'm going to try and see if the rigger will let me know when the guy will be there to puck up the lathe and I'll get my cabinet at the same time so I can see if he'd sell the collet chuck to me.

Your hand wheel is nice and your cleaning job turned out great.

Hal

That chuck guard on that lathe may be made by monarch. I have only seen a couple guards like that on 10ee. 's.
I don't stand behind the chuck and try to work safe but find chuck guards too restrictive.
I did some work in a shop that had a crushed concrete block from a chuck coming off and hitting the base of a wall. The shop owner left the damaged wall to show new employees.
Camlock chucks seem fairly safe. BUT I still always side step the chuck.

That lathe is cleaning up pretty nice. It looks like it sat unused for years. It was just resting and waiting for zamboni2354 to take it home.
That glue they used on masking tape can be really hard to get off.
Tapes are better as long as you buy the right tape and not the cheap stuff.

Per prior note, the reason for phase sequence is PROBABLY because the coolant pump is still reliant on sequence in order to be a pump, rather than a vacuum...

True, but I think it also has to do with the regenerative part of the solid state system..I think.

The video shows on the inside wall of the base casting in the motor compartment a logo consisting of a diamond with the letters DSG. I understand this means the base was cast by Dean, Smith & Grace in England. (As you may know Monarch owned Dean, Smith Grace for a time). John Legge has mentioned this on this forum (or some where anyway).

Glad to see this coming along.

I will keep updating this as I make headway with the 1988 I/M 10ee . I got a new fan, kinda loud but it was the same as what I pulled out of it. It all seems to work the way it should.
Now it's time to clean it all up. Haven't done much since then. I pucked up a few Sterling Drill grinders, and a black diamond drill grinder and have been playing with them a little. I'll keep one the the Sterling's because I have a number of large bits to sharpen. I'll have to spend some time with the Black Diamond and the Darex M5 I already had and pick one of those to keep.

Harsh reality of too much stuff and not enough space means I'll probably have to get rid of my K&T mill....

Then this popped up in a local ad and I couldn't resist so I bought it.

A 1951 Rivett 1020s with a sweet porch paint!!

I plan on doing the 10ee first then the Rivett. I'm att the poi t on the 10ee where I need to start stripping it down. I noticed some leakage somewhere around the gearbox. It also feels like theres excessive slop in the gearing plus it looks like the gearbox has been opened up before so ill definitely be pulling that out to see whats going on.

Going to be a fun project!!

Nice carriage hand wheel from Monarch. Question: from the photo of the handwhweel, it appears there is no clutch, maybe it’s behind the hand wheel. I’m asking because I’m missing the clutch on my 1939 Monarch 10ee Sundstrand. It is my understanding some Monarchs came without hand wheel clutch. In my case, it appears they broke it when removing it.

Jim,

Are you talking about how some you push in the handwheel(or pull-dont remember) and it's then free floating? Is so, yes, these don't have that. Not sure if it was an option or not but I know that is how the 1988 one came originally.

My 39 Sundstrand 10EE has the “No nut hitter” clutch out on the hand wheel.

The handwheel clutch was deleted in the late 50's. My '56 has it and I think I've seen '58 production that did not.
