I've been looking for a good 3-blade stockman ,pocket knife. I carried an old Buck, that my dad gave me for 40 years, Sharpened it down to a tooth pick,
I picked up an old Craftsman [white handle], carbon steel, AIN'T WORTH A $#%@
Next I picked up a NOS. Kabar, ROSEWOOD HANDLE SAMEY- SAMEY [soft]
The NEW Bucks, are made in [you guessed it], Wasn't really impressed with the old Buck, other than sentimental value, It had a stainless blade.
So is there anything Good out there. I want to stay with the Stockman "style', They don't poke holes in your pockets, And you don't look like Rambo, when you clean your fingernails

We supplied custom alloys to knife makers for a few years and one thing I learned is that a good knife is one that the user likes and that no two users are identical.

Personally I like Old timer. I have a folding Kershaw that really impresses me. I like Victorinox Swiss Army for what it is. I have a Camillus Kabar that I use for rough work camping. Also own and like Columbia River Knife and Tool as well as Leatherman. There are more but those come to mind.

Lots of great knives out there but lots of differences among them.

Knifeforums and bladeforums might be good resources for you.

Dave --

There are some very nice Premium Stock knives being made in the US now, from the industry's survivors -- Queen, Case, and Utica -- as well as some newcomers like . . . um, I think it's Canal Street Cutlery, which is a defacto descendent of what I'll call "the real Schrade", which went out of business after defaulting on a bank loan when the bank -- under pressure from a substantially bigger customer, Taylor Cutlery -- cancelled an earlier agreement to extend the loan.

Taylor Cutlery then bought the assets of the original Schrade Cutlery, including manufacturing machinery, tradenames, and intellectual property, at the Sheriff's Sale. Taylor closed the New York plant, moved the manufacturing machinery to China, and opened today's Schrade Cutlery as a subsidiary.

PS: Round bolsters are easier on the pockets than square ones.

+1 on Case, but with the disclaimer that I cannot confirm whether quality has evolved downhill over time. They are made so well and hold an edge so long that I have not needed to buy a new one in many years.

The old Hen & Rooster by Voss, C. Bertram, or Gutman is a pretty good knife but high dollar. J A heinkel (sp) is a good knife, also. I like the old knives and Case made plenty good ones--my favoites being pre-1970.

.
the ones that hold an edge better are steel that rust, many prefer a Stainless blade, depends what is more important to you.

i have seen some wood "carving" knives that were high is price when a Murphy shoe knife can be cut with a grinder cutoff wheel and sharpened with a bench grinder in 5-10 minutes
.
Stanley sells a pocket knife with rotating blade that is changeable. Stanley tools are made all over the world.

"Buck" knives are long lasting knives. I have owned one for years and am very happy. Stays sharp and they are warrenteed forever. (they don't tell you that tho. You have to ask if you manage to break it)

I have a well used Schmidt and Ziegler I carry every day.

Bought at an auction many years ago.

Google surprised me with this link for one for $100:

I 'use' mine and am not a knife expert by any means, but I like this one better than my Case or Old Timer.

case

Carried a case mini trapper since junior high. I favor the stainless blades they offer. Takes a good edge and holds it rather well. The best knife I had as far as staying sharp was a JC Hienkle.

My dad and uncle always carried Barlows, but who knows where their made now? Those were the Industry Standard as far as I knew when growing up...

I have had Swiss Army's for prolly 30 yrs. I would be lost without it! Only quality problem I ever had with them is the "find" feature sometimes doesn't werk, and the toothpicks fall out too easy.

Thank GOD the tweezers stay good tho! :D

I didnt know what a Stockman was untill jamscal posted the picture above and that reminded me of a great knife I have given to me by the Tree Brand Boker Factory in New Jersey over 40 yrs ago.

The one one I have is only 3 3/8 long with all the blades in the handle
But that one shown above look good... and I see they have left the hills of New Jersey
and moved to the mountains of Colorado

Boker offers Pocket knife by Cinch for all requirements

$100 for a knife?... really????

I have carried a pocket knife daily for 60 years, since I was 11. Went to NYC on a trip by air last year and didn't have one with me. Felt like something was missing the whole time.

I recently had a ivory colored Case stolen that I bought used years ago. Fit the description of a stockman. Nicely rounded, didn't wear the pocket.

I kept the long pointed blade razor sharp with a fine point for splinters, and the one with the sharp edge going straight to a point for cutting, scraping, cleaning battery cable terminals, and unscrewing phillips head screws. Good strong knife that stayed sharp.

Check the flea markets and gun shows for knife traders. A good old knife can be had for $15 to $25, sometimes less. I'm afraid I couldn't go $100 for a pocket knife.

If cost is of no concern, several of the above will work.

Dave,

This came up a month or 2 ago. I was looking to replace my Schrade "Old Timer" 3 blade.

Damned thing was made in China. Buck, same knife, right next to it, THAT'S made in China, too.

Looked at the back of the package, Old Timer is now owned by Buck. I bought the Buck, SS, for 16.95. It does take and hold an edge better than the old Schrade carbon steel it was replacing.

ANYhow, I bitched about it in the thread about knives and a member told me to look at Buck's site, and found that they do, indeed, make knives in China, BUT, they also make knives, the same one, but with a different model number, in the USA.

AND, it's on sale AT Buck for 16 bucks.

I like this knife, except that one of the blades is very hard to open, sheepsfoot, I think. Old one, the clip didn't close far enough, and if I didn't press it to the left when closing the knife, the square point (that's an oxymoron, ain't it?) was exposed, could tear a pocket.

I gotta look for something like the old long blade Case knives, to use when out eating steak. Them saws they give you do NOT work well at all.

Cheers,

George

I know your looking for a 3 blade down in your pocket type. But....
Have you ever carried a pocket clip type knife?
I always used to be a "Down in the pocket" kinda guy. They one day a co-worker whipped out his clip knife and i was amazed at the ease at which he retrieved it. So I picked up a single blade clip knife. Once I got the hang of opening it one handed I have grown to love this type of knife.

I can retrieve it and open it one handed even in awkward positions.
I have a very thin aluminum frame knife that is very light and easy to carry that I like the most. It is a POS Gerber that I often disrespect. But it works for work.

You might give a clip type a try if you haven't already.

I have a cheap one ($40) but you can spend the moon if you want.:)

If you want to blow some coin you can contact PM member Kevin Wilkins and he will build you a real nice piece.

I've carried one since 11 as well, but I don't have 60 yrs experience with it jist yet. :o

I doo recall entering a Zepplin concert about 10 yrs ago where at the last minute they had hand waved metal scanners that they ran over you. My chumms went off and they made him toss his knife in the garbage can or go back to the truck with it. He tossed it.

It went off on me as well and they saw that I had my tape measure on that side as well and told me to go on. I WOULD have walked back out to the truck for sure. I aint tossin' my Swiss Army in the dumpster! I'll find the seat later - than you very much!

I did leave mine at home when I knew that I was flying home from Fla a few yrs ago. I couldn't agree more - felt like nakedness. ... and helplessness when/if I needed one during the trip.

IMO they should hand out box cutters to anyone that wants one when you git on the plane! Even out the playing field... :D
