I just bought an old Oliver lathe. I’m a beginner and don’t know the first thing about it and I can’t seem to find any good info or YouTube videos on how to work this old of a lather. Any ideas and references are greatly appreciated!!

I suppose it was replaced by the 25" motor head. Its specs just say four speeds

Actually it was replaced by the 159, about the same size and variable speed. The 25 pattermakers lathes are a lot bigger and heavier, and direct drive. I have a 25C, very smooth, great machine!

Here is my 159 I made from pieces - including new stuff you could still get then.

Nice lathe John! How far disassembled was it? Was the headstock in one piece? I had one of those 20 years ago, had to let go of it when I downsized, miss it!

When I downsize again, I'm going to swap out the 25C for something much smaller and lighter. But I need 17"-18" swing, and a good carriage for turning banjo rims. Don't need more than 24" cc! May have to cobble something together...

Thanks! But that was over fifty years ago - and as the photo caption says, a pile of parts on a pallet.:D Oliver fixed me up enough to make it go - like the piece that rotates to change speed
