OT: Big brother and your car

I have a 2018 Grand Cherokee. Two days ago my car flashed a tire pressures low warning. OK. I added air and all was well. Later that day I got an EMail saying "Safety Warning, tire pressure indication."

Thinking it was perhaps a recall I opened the message.

It showed my VIN#, then the tire pressures, mileage (32,299), dealer info, and percent of oil life remaining until change.

So, I'm thinking this is sort of a generic averages type of deal and some kind of sales pitch for service and don't give it much thought.

Later on I went out and checked my mileage. It was dead nuts on (32,299).......W. T. F........???

I called the dealer service rep and he said, "Oh yeah, your cat is monitored by satellite"..........W.T.F.....???

I asked if I could opt out of being monitored. He said "you can't".......W.T.F..........???

I asked what all was monitored and what was done with the data. He said he really didn't know.

Now I don't have anything, or much, I want to keep secret but just what is being monitored/recorded? Car location via GPS, speed, braking force, acceleration/deceleration, etc etc etc. Who gets to access this info? Law enforcement, insurance company, lawyers, private investigators, ad infinitum?

It's amazing, and sad, how people accept being sheep. A lot of them...most of them...even pay for the privilege.

It's also incredibly unethical behavior on the part of car companies...but then, it's the same for Apple, Google, Microsoft, and so on.

The computer will prove to be the death of mankind. It enables the stupidity people used to only dream of.

I suspect the sure way would be to find the little antenna and wrap it in copper foil, which will likely cause alarms on the dash.

Mine quit working when we moved, now I only get the messages when I go to town leaving me thinking it is a cell based thing not satellite but I have no proof of that.

Years ago when GM first started installing their OnStar system on new cars I was fearful that we were headed down the wrong path? Now everything is out of control. If they can't monitor your car they are watching you on all the cameras that are everywhere? Your phone gives your location at every moment too?

I mean, the particular vulnerability that guy used is probably sealed up tight.

Buddy of mine is an IT system security specialist for the U, and he went out and bought himself a 2012 Focus, "It has a level of electronic integration that I am comfortable with."

Sometimes I like to ask people if they would be OK with a human representative from Big Corp, INC to come into their house, poke around a bit, take receipts out of the garbage cans, and make some suggestions on what to do next. Most people say no.
