OT: Limy Sami medical update

Spoke on the phone this evening, he's in hospital recovering after a 7 odd hour op to remove the lower bowel. He sounded pretty chipper all things considered.
"Im high as a kite, and its perfectly legal!"
"Haha, its alright mate, no worries"
........
"Have you been banned yet?"
"Er nope, not yet."
"Only jokin. Can you do something for me?"
"Sure no worries."
"Start a thread and tell em how free my treatment was, them yanks'll love that. You know what Ive had done!?"
"I've got a rough idea but what exactly do y..."
"3 CT scans.
2 MRI scans.
4 day stay for an Ileostomy, look it up, for spellin too. (I did as well)
Angiogram.
4 months chemo.
Colostomy, lower bowel removal.
14 days in hospital recovering.
I mean, how much would that lot cost!?"
"Are you sure you want me to say all o that?"
"Yeah its ok, and put it in General!"
"In General!? Milacrons hard ass on the jibba jabba."
"Yeahhh... Jibba jabba jibba jabba."
........

So there ya go folks, just 14 days till he's back at his puter so don't say you haven't been warned ;)

In the USA, we are familiar with UK medical care from watching Monty Python (man trying to lift a large rock so he could get a free "Guvmint" truss to go with his free teeth etc.). Also the exciting 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, though I most enjoyed seeing Kenneth Branagh as Isambard Kingdom Brunel, my hero (IKB not Sir Kenneth). Then there is the Brit TV show Doc Martin for a more contemporary view of the NHS.

Anyway, nearly free medical care in the USA is just a matter of being old and retired from the right job. The Miracle of Medicare somehow shrinks medical bills from tens of thousands of dollars to pocket change.

Demon, would you give him my best wishes for a speedy and full recovery? I sure would appreciate it. He seems to be a tough old bird.
 
I’m glad he’s ok, he’s had a bit of a battering poor guy, I don’t have any major complaints about U.K. healthcare, dental care is bloody miserable though
Even when you pay privately it’s shit, it as if we got all the retards and failed doctors and gave them a dental diploma, bloody hysterical ( and I went to the same university they train, they were so thick they had to make them exempt from maths)
I got a quad bypass twelve months back, when being wheeled in the bloody place was full, I thought a) I was underdressed and b) late for the party, I’d guess 12 inc a professor of cardiology, physicists, vets, janitors, funeral directors and a guy in a spacesuit, but that might have been the ketamine as morphine doesn’t work on me for some reason, I asked who’s going to sing always look on the bright side of life cause looking at the operating table I wasn’t getting the comfy chair.
A certain dark humour prevails over the pond gents, I think it’s the bloody weather.

I had an interesting run round the block with US health insurance. A woman had taken a tumble, spraining an ankle, hitting head and elbow and acquiring a little road rash. I offered to take her to an urgent care clinic for checking after a little local first aid. She called the number on her insurance card to make sure she was using an in-network clinic. It being now evening on a Good Friday the call is answered from the Philippines. The agent on the other end is offering different options and I'm checking my phone for location etc. Everything suggested was now closed. So let's try a different strategy. I'll do a search for clinics "near me" and ask her if they're in network. Good enough. We got one, so off we go. Found the place after miles of driving, got the wheelchair to roll her in, lined up at the desk and when she presented her insurance card it doesn't actually work here. "But you can just go to one of the two hospital emergency clinics and it will be covered there." So new map and directions and we do get to the major hospital where she gets X-rays, CT scan, more first aid and I get her back to her room by 2:00 am. Isn't getting medical help fun? If she'd had a subdural hematoma I could have just asked the Philippines for directions to the nearest morgue.

I had a programme on the radio a while back. “ Desert Island Discs “. Various celebrities get to chose 8 discs to take on a desert island when they’ve been shipwrecked. The celeb in question was a British heart specialist who’d been knighted for his services to medicine. I can’t recall his name.

He’d had a secondment to the US as a lecturer. Some big teaching hospital in California or somewhere. Part of the deal was he worked one day a week actually seeing patients.
He told these two stories about his time there.

He’d not been there long when the director of the hospital asked to have a word with him. He said “ You need to give your patients more consultation time, try and make the consultation last at least an hour if you can. These patients are paying good money to see you “.

He was also seeing a long term heart patient who one day failed to turn up for treatment When he asked his receptionist where Mr Smith was she said “ His insurance cover ran out “.

Well Limi I am glad you got such care as you did. I know it must be a real ordeal to go through and yet most everyone goes through something. Glad you have managed through and you got good care. Here there would be a bill due even if good health insurance is had.

I suppose soon you will be out and chatting up the “birdie girls”. Isn’t that the term which was used or was it a variation of that? I thought it was a interesting term and forgot the detail. I would just ask what exactly the term was and what it means from our friends who know.

Limi we miss you I suppose this means you will be visiting a bit more here. That is what we all like to see.
