By now I'd be happy it's working and just get used to the new quirks.
I like the sound of that.

The screw and the bottom of the plunger had 45 degree angles that looked to be matching is the reason I did not go for the gap. It almost looked like an O-ring belonged in a recess in there, I have a supply of 1mm thick O-rings but none looked right so Loctite seemed to be the best answer.

A bit of swarf is holding the pressure relief valve open. Not sure about that pump but usually the PRV is the bigger hex that the pressure line is on. Put a filter in it. 20 years ago I failed a pump on my dually. I flushed the system and replaced the pump and it failed in a week. I got a new pump, flushed the system and put in line filters in the return lines from the hydra boost and steering gear, end of problem.
Question is - did the swarf come from the failure or was it debris from manufacturing "over there". A lot of people I know have had trouble with brand new plumbing fixtures that turned out to be bits of plastic, etc.

Several garage owners have told me that not only are many parts hard to find these days but even once quality brands have had a high rate of out of the box failures from these overseas sourced parts.

Scottl,
Regular parts store said that Cordon SP? used to be a good parts rebuilder but has become terrible after being acquired by another company. The plunger had incredible scoring on the 17mm OD and general soot like dirt clinging too it that was not consistent with a 30 mile drive to return the core and pulley installation tools. My regular independent parts store dropped them as a supplier and has no one to supply Jeep rebuilt pumps today.

The box the pump came in and the installation guide had no mention of the rebuilder's name. I asked the rather helpful tech the company name and sure enough it was the same as the independents store's old supplier.

Long story short I am rather sure the swarf was from the rebuilt unit. As mentioned another counter person said it was my fault for not installing the filter they forgot to recommend and did not even have in stock. If the swarf originated in the pump itself a filter would not have caught debris that originated from the pump as it would only catch debris that made it through the steering gear box and was on its way back to the tank.

Was it a Cardone pump?
Those parts usually have a 50% success rate.

I had a Cardone rebult water pump shoot the fan
through my brand new radiator. Looking at it, the
fan hub flange was green Loctited to the pump shaft
because it had a .007" LOOSE fit. Should be a press
fit. Fuking junk. And I had to pinch off 4 tubes on my
brand new radiator. Looks like ass. Fuk Cardone.

@FredC Rockauto has new (not reman) pumps available.

I always buy parts through them when the situation is not immediate. Their prices are usually 20%-70% less than the physical stores and they have a much better selection.

I had to buy a starter for my truck from advance auto, it was $200 for a reman. Rockauto had a brand new delco starter for like $160 but again, you have to have the luxury of waiting for it to arrive.

Cordone is probably it. The local independent parts guy said they used to use a supplier that sounded like Cardone when talking to him on the phone. He said they went to crap after the buyout so your experience fits. The box had no rebuilder's name on it, so they are not proud of their product anymore. At least their technical guy on the phone was helpful.

Freedommachine,
Good info, I thought getting local the next day would get me back on the road by Monday, who knew that the bad pump and weather would make it a 2 week affair.
