I have some general questions about the spindle in my early 1900 Cincinnati Cutter and Tool Grinder. The spindle has split bronze bearings with the outside of them tapered. As you tighten the nut it grips down on the spindle. The spindle speeds are 5950 and 3680 rpm. Lubrication is provided by oil cups that run into the bearings that have circle pieces of felt in the bottom.
My questions are:
1) What oil should I be using?
2) The felt seals were either missing or damaged. What type of felt (firmness, thickness, etc) should I be looking for to make new seals?
Thanks!
