Anyone have a recommendation for a machine mover in the Cincinnati area? I have been talking with one but he has yet to quote and my time is getting short. I'm getting nervous. I need to move a 4000 lb bed mill, 16" lathe and a hydraulic surface grinder plus some smaller stuff.

I move machine tools all the time so I have a few questions before I offer any advice. What kind of access to the machines? How far will they be moved? What kind of access is at the new location? Is everything disconnected from power and ready to be moved? What is your time line to get everything moved? will the machines need to be setup (leveled and so forth) and powered up or just set in place on leveling feet?

In general moving machines in your size and weight range isn't difficult if access in both locations is good. Share some particulars and maybe I can help.

Access is not good at the old shop. Need to go over grass. I put them all in with an extended reach fork lift so I know what it takes to get them out. The grass condition will need to be reasonable. Very good access at the new shop. I just need them moved to the new shop next couple of weeks - I will set them up myself. I do have extensions available if it does take longer.

All the machines will be disconnected and ready for transport today.

You might contact Will Gardner as he has moved equipment for me in the past:

Gardner Rigging and Transfer

200 Market St.
New Richmond, OH 45157
(513) 797-6690

And there is always Fenton Rigging and SK Rigging for larger ($$$) projects...

I assume you contacted local rigging companies before posting here. If not try Gardner and Fenton. The guy I know is now working out of the Cleveland area so he is unavailable especially for small jobs.

The other option is hire a couple old time machinist to help you with the move. You would probably have to rent an extend-a-boom forklift and maybe a deck over trailer and a 3/4 ton truck if you don't have one. But with the right help and some tie down straps you could do it.

Thanks! I will call him tomorrow. I did talk to the other fellow today and has made promises to show up next week but he did not show up this week like he was supposed to. I need at least a backup plan. Not moving them myself or with friends. Just don't have the time or energy this time. The move has been a killer.

And thanks for the suggestion about talking to an auction house. I know exactly who to talk to. The one guy I have been talking to was referred to by my machine supplier.

With the continual rain in Ohio, the 'grass' barrier is going to be significant. There are HDPE 4x8 panels to preserve the terrain available at rental. They have kinds with 'traction lugs' of sorts on one or both sides. Alternative is road plates, which will have higher capacity and cost.

Adequate protection of the grass will let you get them out the way they came in. A 10K forklift might have problems even with turf protection, due to total load on the front axle.

If you can drive a rollback thru the grassy area, right up to the door, the mill could be placed on wood skids and dragged up the rollback... if the base allows a sufficiently-wide footprint.

Thanks!

Looks like Gardner is out of business..........

Thanks for all the replies! I have an agreement with an outfit from Springfield to move them next Wednesday. They gave me a reasonable price and they have plates for protecting the ground. Wish me luck!

Well I was worried for no reason. Dan's Towing/rigging/machine moving showed up today and did a great job! They were well prepared and only minimal damage to the grass area. It was a bit too warm so we did have some mud but they bought mats for the tow motor to run on and literally no damage in that area to the grass. Just a quick reseed there and the rest of the damage is very easily repairable - no fill required.

Overall very happy with the work they did.
