New to me would like to mount on shelf to the wall. Looks like this unit wants to be accessible from the sides (on a pedestal)??? Also why the reversing switch? Thanks Bob

Those types of grinders use the face of a cup wheel not the periphery of the wheel. Depending on which face and which side of the bit you are sharpening being able to reverse the direction keeps you working the “down” side of the wheel.
