Hello All

It's early so forgive the short start of this tread. I start this class at 6:30AM EST. I'm not used to getting up so early. 6:30 is 5:30 back home. LOL
I'm working at a USA Navy Depot this week and teaching 15 students. 14 men and 1 woman. I will be adding photo's as the class progresses. Yesterday we finished up the basic instruction on how to Biax Power Scrape and today we start projects. Were scraping Starrett 199 levels soles, Surface plates, straight-edges, we are going to scrape a 36" Blanchard Grinder saddle. I'll write later as I have to scoot. Rich

Pic 1. Shop while guys are on break, Scraping Starrett 199 sole, Student showing off his practice part and door going inside the plant. I planned on taking more pictures, but to be honest I forgot. Hard to remember when your teaching. lol I will post more tomorrow.

Today after work I drove over to Walmart and bought several bodles of Craft paint, so tomorrow we can test it to see if we can find a cheap Canode Substitute. I did order some Charbbonel engraving in too. I know the Charbbonel works but, just doing some experimenting.

Have a few more pictures....

Pic L to R Class group pic, Luke one of my A + students scraping a Starrett 199 sole, same picture in foreground, scraping a prism SE on a mag chuck raised up, Class group pic. Mike on right scraping a surface plate, Name plate on a 4E Pratt & Whitney Jig Bore they scraped before my class, Jig Bore with table saddle and table removed, ready to ship back to customer.

I was telling some folks, I started teaching here 20 years ago and all the Journeymen that rebuild the machines like the Jig Bore took my classes. DLA has me come in and teach the new hires as the Journeymen are to busy to teach the Apprentices. In this class I had I have a handful of Journeymen too that were hired 10 or less years ago and never learned to use the BIAX correctly. It's been a long week....one down, one to go. I'm staying over the weekend and tomorrow Im going to the USA's largest sportsman show held in Harrisburg. Some fun and relaxation...sighhh

One of my students rebuilds a lot of Monarch Lathes. He came up with this great idea for scraping the Tail-Stock sole plate. He milled 2 holes into a spare cast iron surface plate so he could blue up the top of the plate so later he can set it upside down on parallels to mill the worn bottom flat and V. We had to scrape the plate flat after he milled it. We are testing Red Charbonnel ink for the bluing. It works good.

I posted this in another thread, but this is a device or machine they use here to straighten gibs.
You measure the opening of the center section of the bent gib with feeler gages...3rd picture and then put that side up on the press and tighten the screw so you go by that number on the indicator and keep bending and releasing the screw until you get the gib straight. Then once it's flat with in .0005" you scrape the back or positive side to 5 to 10 PPI and ten scrape or put a wearstrip material on the wear side. They use Phenolic or Moglice here. They don't use a lot of Rulon or Turcite..
