Hello! I'm looking for a shop that would be willing to do one or two small jobs, in the northern Virginia area. I need to resurface several cast iron woodworking machine tops, so 28" x 32" for example. No high-spec surface finish; the surface from a face mill is perfectly adequate. Let me know if you know someone who could do this for me. Thanks!

Why "Northern Virginia?"

All manner of costs - land, space, power, HVAC, staff, TAXES... are far too high here to have such services locally based at affordable rates. Bleeding-edge Aerospace R&D can barely stand it.

The tables dismount.

A(ny) woodworker can easily make a protective crate.

Ship them ... to an outfit that specializes in such work at known-good price/performance.

THEY... will know how to refinish whilst avoiding or correcting for warping and such... if they do them regularly. Because "move" they always want to do when you go to milling, belt-sanding, or grinding on 'em.

A general job shop with an expert hand will tell you right up front he's going to have to do extra finessing to NOT end up with a warped table and will have to charge you to learn as they go. At Aerospace / Defense industry rates, even? PRICEY! DAMHIKT!

I'm in NOVA, 1960's onward. One R&D tasking was $6,000 to convert my freshly done India-ink on vellum drawings to CAD/CAM. To make me $ 110 worth of "pilot production" parts.

Folks have high costs, here. Big Government, Big Corp, Institutionalized/legalized theft feeding off the tax teat. US Grant, onward, sucking the US treasury dry is our rice bowl, 156 years, and counting! See also Newport News. Iron in tidewater.. Paperwork in NOVA. We git 'em whether bidding or building!

You didn't think the CSA actually LOST that fool war, did you?

Follow the money! It don't all MAKE it as far as Klakafornikyah before it's gits wastid!

Meanwile, back in the tight-budget world..

If I can't DIY correct it meself? Sawdust-making side of my environment usually finds it cheaper to buy NEW tools!

Not as if your tables were as massive as industrial-class lathe beds.

Which we ship. To specialists. A state - or several states - away. Where they can afford to operate.

Have to do.

What YOU have is easy to ship.

And - not new-news - NOT as easy to keep FLAT!

Ask about that amongst experienced woodie machine guys. Flat tables are beloved, even if poxed. Warped not so much.
