I need to make a new backplate for my skinner 3 jaw chuck. I am looking for dimensions for the bolt circle to mount it back on the chuck.

You're going to have to do some measuring and adding and subtracting and maybe some dividing to come up with the bolt circle on your chuck. Skinner has not been in business for at least 70 plus years and I'm not aware of any literature that exists that may have that information available to help you out.

I have never needed to know the dimensions of the chuck mounting hole locations.

First, I machine the front of the adapter to fit any recess in the back of the chuck.

If a chuck has through holes, I use a transfer punch to mark the location of the first tapped hole in the adapter. Then I drill and tap the adapter and fasten the chuck to it. Now the other hole locations can be marked with the transfer punch so they can be drilled and tapped.

If a chuck has tapped holes on the back, I use Heimann transfer screws to mark the locations of the drilled holes in the adapter.

Or just rub chalk on the tapped face and it will transfer to the backplate whre you will be able to pick the centres out close enough??'' by eye, ........ and the mounting bolt holes need plenty of clearance anyway.

Sami will now get flamed for being a hack - despite the method's worked for him for over half a century.

If'n you was a Hack....you would have welded the chuck to the spindle, no back plate needed...

You can just lay a piece of onion paper on the back of the chuck and make a pencil rubbing. Then, invite a machinist over and tell him you'd like to show him your etchings of chucks' rear. He'll know what to do.
